I was inspired to try and catch the "feel" of the painting by the Danish painter Anna Ancher ( 1859-1935) that I saw at an exhibition in January. I used a drejl draft and tried to mix all the golden colours I could get hold of with a light grey and a variegated grey.
In the second one I resleyed to a closer sett (8 ends per cm) and used a finer weft. Now and then I made areas where I mixed in some golden colour into the grey weft, to get the warm sunny feeling of that painting.
I have really enjoyed playing with this and may make another version one day.
Now THIS IS interesting! One of the things I noticed was the ratio of the soft colors to the harsh, bright colors in the painting. The artist was quite daring to use such a large ratio of the orange. Totally love to see this, Ellen!
My, oh my, oh my. Okay, Ellen, up until today I haven't felt limited by my 8 shafts... but now I see a reason to have more.
The detail shots make me want to touch these scarves and fold them to see both sides -- but the overall project enchants me! I love that you started with your response to a lovely painting, and I love seeing your process.
You make me want to weave! More and more and more!
Ruth
Hi Sally, yes she was a fantastic female artist, in her lifetime overshadowed by her painter husband and some other painters, but I totally love her work!!
Nobody can paint sunshine like her :-)
Really Ruth, I am sure you could do something really lovely like this on 8 shafts! Very often that's all I use, too. But I do recognize the feeling when I see wonderful projects from 12-shaft weavers and upwards. Trouble is... there would be no end to it, so have decided to be happy with what I have.
You are a great support and encourager, Ruth :-) Thank you so much!
Ellen
great work capturing both the lines and colors in the painting. Awesome :)
I am delighted to see that you like my work :-)
I just popped over to see your projects on Ravelry, and I miss some more photos, but what I can see is GREAT! (Nice to have another Dane on board)
Great use of inspiration. Really like this Ellen. You should include a picture modeling it too!
I am glad you like it, Alison, but don't you think I have been posing enough on Weavolution already??!! :-)
Ellen
I've been sitting here just looking and looking at your wonderful piece. I really like the architectural feel in this piece , achieved through careful placement of stripes and blocks, representing the room and doorway. The colors are so interesting. You've taken something that inspires you and have made it your own.
Actually, I love seeing you wear your weavings. Other's too. It makes them more tangible.
I am very delighted to read your comment, Cathie. Another response that makes it a pleasure to share projects on Weavolution :-)
What more is there to say! Absolutely beautiful. Thanks to the weavolution weaving terms glossary I understand the Danish "drejl".
I can imagine you did the weaving in your summerhouse. The painting has such a sunny feeling, and so does your project!
I have never found the English word for "drejl" or "dräll" as the Swedes say :-)
Yes, it was that sunny feeling I fell for and it just goes so well with the atmosphere of that place!
