I needed a warp to set up the little Toika Laila, I also wanted to test my overshot design for a coverlet. The warp is 8/2 cotton with a 16/2 plain weft and 3/2 cotton pattern weft. The actual coverlet sample uses red wool. It is a large scale repeat. I am glad I sampled as I found a design error which I can now correct before starting the 60 inch coverlet.
Hi Dawn
Lovely sample......is this overshot pattern traditional, does it have a name?
Also, may I quiz you about this Toika loom? Are you enjoying weaving on it?
Beth
Nice work - - we must be sisters separated at birth - i'm putting overshot on my loom today!
Thanks ladies, a small portion of the pattern came from Davidson but I pretty much rehashed the whole thing, added and extended design blocks to enlarge the pattern scale.
As for the Laila, it is a great little loom! I love the fact it has 6 shafts enabling two to be used for selvedge. It folds in the back, it is fairly lightweight yet can handle more tension than a Baby Wolf or equivalent size jack loom. I have two of them for teaching and a Toika Liisa 48 inch (and two other BIG looms) The Laila is a little like a miniature version of the Liisa.
Mary - I too have been working with linen, it is so beautiful when finished! Maybe placing the warp in a plastic bag with a moist towel will help - then when you are ready to beam, you will have a little more grip on the threads. Looking forward to seeing it woven.

Hi Dawn
Many thanks for the info about the Laila loom. When you say this loom can handle more warp tension than other Jack looms of a comparable size, do you mean the Laila can handle a fine to medium linen warp?
I'm thinking that I might get a small loom that's simple to warp up, and that can cope with weaving linen for clothing fabric......
Thanks, Beth
Hi Beth, the nature of countermarch allows the warp to be tightly tensioned. The loom can handle linens although I would not recommend rugs. The back warp beam folds and it is fairly compact. I purchased mine used as a pair, new the cost is about the same as an 8 shaft Julia by Glimakra, I have been told they are similar looms, the Julia has an overhead beater, the Laila underslung. I am very happy with these looms!
