So many colors, textures!

The detail is scrumptious! Using the outline to add more more texture is quite exciting.

yarns?

Hi Cathie, What yarns are you using and do you have a fav vendor for them?  Besides the outlining as Karren commented on, I love the texture you introduced with the hatching. What a happy piece. Liese

HiLiese I used wool, Elf

HiLiese
I used wool, Elf yarns from Fine Fiber Press, Kathe Todd Hooker and Pat Sparks proprietors, and embroidery floss. They are on the west coast so call in the afternoon. For the larger larger piece if i can't get enough of the elf yarns i may mix them with moya from Glimakra which i've never tried before. Do you have a fav yarn? Techniques used, pick and pick, chine, melange , color blending and sumac. It was fun but very challenging as I'm just learning how to use these techniques.

A liitle critique

A little critique is helpful. My goal is for for the eye to move upward on the diagonal. Put the little horizontal bars in for texture , eye relief, and interest. Are they too much? Are they eye "stoppers" and work against my intention? I'd be very interested in your thoughts.

Cathie, I think the piece

Cathie, I think the piece works better visually in the detail than in the overall photo.  This usually means to me that I have something off in the proportions.  But I only see one photo don't know about real life. Just look at the photo enlarged and see what you think.

Yes Karren, thanks, I do

Yes Karren, thanks, I do think the proportions are off particularly on the left hand side which will be very noticeable when enlarged. Didn't see that.

yarn & critique

Karen,  when I first looked at your piece I was aware of colour, movement, then the nuances  in that order. I don't find anything distracting, including the left upper corner.  Thanks for the info about the Elf yarns, I'll check them out their website.  Right now I'm dyeing my own using a 2/54 NZ wool I bought from R&M, fine for a few colours but having to dye more is holding me up.  Liese

Hi liesle Thanks for your

Hi liesle
Thanks for your input. I can see that dyeing the majority of your yarns for tapestry would slow you down. May I ask what does R&M stand for, I'd like to look them up. The other place you might try is the Aubosson House in Calgary House , I've been considering them too

R&M

R&M is the company name, they are in Kentucky or Tenn. and sell various weights of wools (besides other yarns) starting at $5/ lb. They have a website - just search using R&M Yarns

:D

I am drooling over all the colours in this.  My eye definitely travels up towards the top right, but I do feel like the detail is easier on my eye.  I think maybe the dark creeping up the lefthand side is competing with upward, forward flow of the diagonals.  But as Karen Said it's hard to know unless we see it in real life!  Love the texture between the diagonals (of course!).  Please keep posting the eye candy!

Thanks JacQueline. I see it

Thanks JacQueline. I see it now. I was starting with darks at the bottom of the diagonals moving to lights, but as the diagonals got shorter, I got a darker side, colorful, but definitely darker, not what I want, I think.
I see that with your rose cartoons that you colored them, a good starting point. I guess I'll get out some colored pencils and rework this design.
I appreciate your input. So much of of our work is done in isolation, it's great to get thoughts from other artists! Thanks for your compliments too:)
