I have finally returned to studying finnweave. AnJe posted a beautiful wall hanging that she has made in this technique last week and that got the ball rolling again. I wove a sample on my backstrap loom using Suzanne Baizerman's instructions in Double Woven Treasures of Old Peru some time ago. This time I used a tutorial by David Xenakis in the Prairie Wool Companion 1982 and wove the sample you see here. My aim is to understand the charting system well enough to be able to chart designs from pre columbian textile fragments that I have collected that have been woven in a balanced double cloth. I would also like to weave pieces based on the designs of the Huichol people of mexico who still practice this technique on their backstrap looms. I used three sets of string heddles and a shed rod for this piece. More about this on my blog. where you can see the pre columbian textile fragments and Huichol design that I would like to reproduce.
I dreamed about double weave last night and here is this beautiful example! You have done a beautiful job and I am inspired to try it!
Laverne,
I should have known it was your post! Finnweave is on my radar, too. (Just haven't gotten there yet.) Happy to know you are going down that path, so WHEN I need to know, I'll know WHO to go to for technique!
What a gorgeous pattern!
oh my, the temptation to try this is very big. But I really want to finish my ufo's (unfinished objects) first .
this looks really good. Was it difficult to keep the width even?
Very very nice design, and, as always ,perfect fabric.
Laverne, do you speak spanish?
I have got some texts about how to put the heddles, for double and triple weave fabric.( in spanisch).
You can see textiles from some precolumbian textiles:

Hi Jeannine. I have not had trouble maintaining width so far. I find if I just do the background color without any pick up, it is really hard to keep the weave balanced...it wants to shift over into warp faced. As soon as I start doing the pickup, it sorts itself out and behaves perfectly...strange!
Hola Graciela,
Si, hablo espanol. :-)
Me gustaria ver los textos de los que hablas y gracias por los enlaces!
Oh, what a wonderful project. I feel so proud that I´ve been an inspiration for you when it comes to Finnweave, and you are an inspiration to me. I´m a great fan of your work : )
Very nice. I follow your blog and have your Andean pebble weave book. My guild is focusing on inkle looms this month. I plan to try out so e of your patterns. One day I will make a backstrap loom. Thanks for the inspiration.
Es un trabajo muy hermoso, me encanta y me pone los dientes largos, que cosas hermosas haces.
