Dear Friends,
After some exploration and counseling from my Weaving Guru, I attempted my overshot placemat pattern again. It was as you suggesteed, Claudia, I was not beginning with tne correct treadle!! I had been so frustrated because I did overshot in weaving class at FIT, and I breezed thru it. I couldn't understand how a previous Thrill of Victory could turn into an Agony of Defeat so quickly.
My Weaving Guru can to visit while Effort # 2 was on the loom, which we both enthusiastically admired. Treadling order correct, beat even and square, no mistakes, only one broken warp, selvedges fairly even- very impressive!! The following day I popped a Netflixx movie in the DVD and happily threw shuttles all afternoon, noting a few errors immedialtey after I made them, so they were easily corrected. By George, I've got it!
Well, not quite. Can you see the error?? It is not the T pin repairing the broken warp. Oh, no, my dears, it is FAR more sinister than a simple broken warp...
I discovered the error with only 3" left before finishing the first mat. Take a look, and try not to cry...

Give up?
it is a threading error..See the left side of the mat-it has 2 blue stripes? Compare to the right side- 3 blue stripes..My design is supposed to be symmetrical. I did major math, charting, and calculus to create a design w 3 stripes on all sides,.
ARGH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! WEAVEFAIL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Oh, no. I see it clearly and I feel your pain. It is now a design feature. Asymmetrical is in, no joke. I dare someone to say a word about it. The placemat looks great! Nice selvedges, nice even beat, lovely T-pins.
So sorry. I feel your pain. So anxious to get this cast off, stitches out and back to weaving. I am almost done with my WeaveFail placemats which Laurie so kindly gave me an alternate treadling for. It's my overshot WeaveFail. Looking forward to sharing it now that you have started this wonderful group.
Thanks Gail (and Fog)
Make the most of it. Perhaps put the wider band at the bottom? The main problem is that they are a little too close to the same. Play with embroidery to accentuate the differences? Make it look planned, smile, and don't say a word. The weaving is lovely.

Dear Laurie & Claudia,
Thank you for your kind words! This first place mat is for one of the Prima Weavers in our guild- I could not disgrace myself by giving her a mat with a huge error in it- I would be too humiliated. I am satisfied at least that I got the pattern figured out and I have a nice beat and fairly straight selvages. I now know how to do the pattern correctly. There is definitely a learning curve to weaving!
I do have a suggestion on unweaving which Weaving Guru thought was smart. To unweave this overshot, I could not waste limited warp and weft. so I untied the warp from the front beam and slid the weft off the warp. Then I rewound my bobbins and warp.
That was a good way to do it quickly. Another way is to carefully push two warps apart and then (very) carefully cut the wefts down between them.
Even prima weavers make goofs, at least all the ones I know <g>
Laurie Autio
Hi Laurie,
Thanks for the tip- on this project I have a limited amount of warp and weft, so I am afraid to lose any of it!
XO Gail & Fog
