Measuring Handspun Yarn

Weavalong's picture

I have decided to spin some Merino for practice before tackling my Alpaca.

The bobbin seens to be filling very slowly and it feels as if I have hundred of metres on the bobbin and its only half filled. I measured the thread and its 24wpi. Which is the best way to measure the yarn without actually physically doing so?

Is there a cute little machine that can do this job?

I drawled the Internet

I drawled the Internet looking for a McMorran/ McMorran Balance and could not be sure that what I found was right.

Could you please give me a hint about what the McMorran Balance looks like. This must sound very funny to those of you who know.

Sure, here is an address for

Sure, here is an address for one source, there are others and I don't support one company over the others, but I know this web address in my head:  http://www.woolery.com/pages/spinaccess.html  This should take you directly to the spinning accessories page.

My Woolery parcel arrived

My Woolery parcel arrived yesterday short supplied........

I ordered three items : McMorran Balance, Yarn Guage and a Majacraft diz, a bit of a luxuary but it looked good in the photo.

The parcel arrived minus the diz and the owner intimated she she had input into the packing of my goods and demanded I check through the "packing paper" for the diz which was "in a a box" and "wrapped in paper" and presumably tell her when I had found the missing diz. Needless to say, the client was blamed for not unpacking carefully by a bit of intimidation suggesting  "I packed it myself" routine from the company. My guess is a less robust client may have shrunk or slunk off losing the diz to the company but the fighter in me rebelled for all people who find themselves in similar positions.

Unhappily this story is still unresolved. The diz was a handsome one at $25.50.

What really took the biscuit the person in question ended their e-mails with the words "With Joy", but to be honest the experience has been far from "Joy or Joyfull."

The McMorran Blance works a treat so its been worth any aggrevation to have it.

hi, sounds like you need a McMorran balance. I have seen them advertised in a lot of online weaving and knitting stores, so you may even find one locally. They are supposed to be easy to use and you can get them in both metric and imperial. You only need to use a little bit of your precious handspun to calculate how long your yarn would be. I'm not sure of the actual procedure, but have been contemplating buying one, ;-) !

Eventually the Diz arrived..................

The diz arrived without a compliment slip, a note of any sort rattling around in an biggish box. I suspect to make a point by the angry current owner of the Woolery.

I was very rudely treated and told blatant lies by a person perporting to be the owner. My first parcel had no paper in it at all. My McMorran Balance and Yarn guide were in a box with about three air bags as packaging so there was very little chance of the Diz being "thrown out" or "lost" in the packing.

I'm happy its over. but this must be a warning to others who face similar problems with short supply. If you are sure you are right don't be intimidated by businesses telling you fibs and blaming you for "lost Items", stick to your guns and get a result. The diz was expensive at $25.00, I'm glad I fought tooth and nail to get it back.

Glad you got your diz. Now, I

Glad you got your diz.

Now, I like using a diz, but sometimes I just pull the top off with my fingers.  I'll do that if I'm using handheld, rather than a stationary set-up.  I actually like the top from a diz better than the hand pulled.  Just saying that in a pinch you can get away with lack of a diz.  I haven't combed anything for a whole week.  ;>(.  I'm going to go comb some super fine merino in burnt orange.
