Scallop Leno Edge for scarf

debmcclintock's picture

Here is an edge I am experimenting with for a scarf.  I am paging thru the books I listed earlier to find my reference.  I "thought" it was West's book but now I cannot find the reference.  I know I did not think of this!  I will update my info when I find the correct reference.

Weave a plain weave field, next create a row leno across the web, plain weave in another section and a second row of leno, then proceed with the scarf body.  At the other end reverse yourself.   I guess it doesn't have to be all plain weave but I would do the do 2 shots leading up to the leno as plain weave to stabilize the web.

After the scarf is off the loom, serge or hem stitch the end, turn it, then thru it to the second plain weave field with the leno twist centered in the fold.

I can imagine doing the end that will be hemmed in a very light thread to reduce hem weight although this sample doesn't have excessive weight.

I'll put the finished edge photo in the forum and then put the example of how the hem was folded in my project file...here we go let's see if the visuals work!

Hi Deb.....that is a beautiful finish!  I will be anxious to find out the source of your inspiration.  What size threads are the warp?  I ask because I want some perspective on using this type of finish with extremely fine yarns.....

This is a Heritage yard warp

This is a Heritage yard warp kit....I'll post the details from the labels in my project list.  I'm still paging thru my references...this will teach me to go "ahah" and go to the loom without putting a sticky tab in the reference book.

details posted here::

let's see how links work, it's fun to be learning communication software the same time you are trying to learn weaving software!

Hi guys,re the Leno edge for

Hi guys,re the Leno edge for a scarf I've done a second scarf in a finer sett and posted it under my projects, here's the link:

www.weavolution.com/node/4259

The first sample I did was set at 18 epi and the leno was picked up at 2 ends at a time.  The 2nd sample was set at 30 epi and the leno picked up at 2 ends at a time in the twist.....I'm thinking I am going to take a finer sett up to twisting 4 ends in each leno pick up to make a better edge.  I like how the 2nd try worked out I just want a thicker scallop.  I think I am going to drop the plain weave except for the hem turn and work the leno into the woven pattern in the next scarf.

Now...here's how I came to my source..refer to the book list in another thread in this forum but I retraced my steps and here's how I got here...gather your books and follow along

Page thru Jean Wilson's Joinings, Edges and Trims - a wealth of ideas there

Pick up Virginia West's book finishing touches, look for the woven loop fringe and look at the chapters with leno and end binding edges.  The book has been republished with different chapter titles but those are the main two hmmmmmms

Now that your mind is thinking this way by the first two book warm up  pick up Finishes in the Ethnic Tradition by Suzane Baizerma & Karen Searle, page thru and stop at page 12...there it is, picot hem......

I don't think I would have appreciated this gem presented by these ladies unless I had been thinking thru the edge and reading thru the other books (which have lots of great ideas)!

Yikes!!

Thanks Vicki.  I will have to consult a higher authority on this one.  Little gliches, should be able to get it fixed.

I'll let you know what happens.
