Rhinebeck!

Sally Orgren's picture

Okay, I'll bet the acorns are starting to fall (unless you live in NYC, and then you'll have to share the urban signs of Fall with the rest of us!) and my thoughts are turning to the NY Sheep and Wool Fest held annually in Rhinebeck, coming up on Oct 17-18.

Anyone planning to attend? There is talk afoot of a meet-up among Weavolution members. Just wondering if anyone is interested?

I'll be there, both days.

I'll be there, both days. I hope we do have an opportunity to meet up.

Also, when you buy yarn that's not expressly intended for weaving, be sure to let the vendor know you plan to weave with it.

It's important to keep people's minds on weaving. In the eleven-odd years that I've been going to Rhinebeck, I've seen a declining presence of weaving-related items.  It's starting to turn around in the past couple of years.

Okay, I'm collecting names

Okay, I'm collecting names and we'll come up with a plan...

...Any ideas for the plan?!  ; - )

I printed out the map of the fairgrounds. It's been a few years since I attended, so I don't know where picnic tables or a place to sit could be found. (But I DO what is in each barn and building!)

I guess we could just decide on a time and place. It might be nice to do it in the early afternoon of each day, so everyone could swap tips on where the good vendors and food can be found while there is still time to take action and visit those vendors, and eat the great food...

Thoughts?

I may be there on Sat or Sun--we're combining our 40th Anniversary with a visit to our grandchildren, and as it  happens will be in or around Rhinebeck.  Can't promise tomake it, but will try.

  Who are the better weaving

Who are the better weaving vendors at Rhinebeck? I'm mostly interested in equipment, such as Bluster Bay shuttles & such.

I've got to say, I was at Maryland this spring and was really disappointed in the lack of weaving equipment, even at Mannings, Susans Fiber Shop and The Yarn Barn, which, in their catalogs, support weavers quite well. I did ask all over the place, so at least they knew they could have had a customer. :-)

What building(s) is the fried

What building(s) is the fried artichoke and wine area near? Based on her message, Claudia needs some help to pick a spot. Perhaps you can direct us all to the locale you suggest?

 Claudia, since you are the

Claudia, since you are the marketing arm of Weavolution you are probably best qualified to make a call or send an email to the organizers of Rhinebeck and ask if we can reserve a small meeting area.  I don't know the name of it but MAFA reps used to meet in an enclosed building with chairs separate from the festival.  I think it is building 34 on the interactive map.  It was very central and easy to find off of the food court near all the small barns.  There are also picnic tables near one of the entrances.  Things seem to change each year.  To be honest, I can't figure out the layout from the fancy map they have online.

I don't know the name of the areas so maybe if you contacted the Dutchess County Fair group at the bottom of this link  www.sheepandwool.com/  they could come up with something wonderful once you explain Weavolution to them.

 Claudia,

Any luck getting a place for us to meet?

Do you/does anyone know if Loop of the Loom is going to be there with the Saori demonstration and peace banner weaving?  We could all meet and chat while taking turns weaving on the peace banner.

I am working on a meeting

I am working on a meeting place.  I don't think I have found the correct email contact because no one answers regardless of what I put in the subject line.

Any suggestions?  I will definitely ask about Building 34.  I will also contact MAFA and see where and when they are meeting.

Thanks for the ideas, keep them coming.  I'm working on it.

Claudia

I am also going to add a post in the Chat area to see who else will be at Rhinebeck.

suggestion for meeting place

Claudia, if you can't get thru to the Rhinebeck folks why don't you meet somewhere near the sheep to shawl contest.  That is ALWAYS fun to see and there is always tables and chairs near the area so an informal meet up would work in the area.....hopefully someone will answer you so that you can hang your banner!

I have had several emails

I have had several emails with the festival organizers and they assure me that many large groups just pick a grassy area to meet.  I have been looking at what goes on in various buildings and Building E has lots happening and there appears to be a grassy area labelled "13" nearby.  So, let's meet on Saturday, 12-2pm, at the grassy area 13 next to building E.

If the weather is bad, rain, snow, etc., look for us in Building E.  We'll find a way to be there.  Otherwise, Meetup on 10/16 at Area 13!!

Secret Plan for "Area

Secret Plan for "Area 13"...

If it's sunny, I am planning to bring a blanket or two to share, and the famous (or infamous!) traveling inkle that you may have seen on the thread "My Corner of the World".

I am also considering bringing the Mighty Metal Monster (8" Structo) warped for Monk's Belt, as our guild is doing a round robin in November, and we are also doing a goodie bag item for next summer's MAFA workshop weekend. (I'll even let you throw a pick or two if you want!)

Consider bringing your rigid heddle and join the fun! And yes, I'll have my drop spinning in my "Happy Bag" (as Daryl Lancaster calls it) but I figure there will be plenty of spinners and knitters present to demo that activity. What makes us unusual is that we are WEAVERS—Woo Hoo!

Sally

P.S. I'll probably affix my avatar to something so you know who I am. Consider doing the same when you come! As visual people, I noticed we might not remember a name, but we do pretty well with remembering a great image or project post!

Hey New York Peeps— It's Rhinebeck time!

It's approaching rapidly, Saturday, October 15th. Let's gather for a meet up between 11 and 1. (That should give everyone time to shop too, right? ;-) Bring (or wear) your wovens, we wanna see what you've been up to!

It will be like the BEST part of a guild meeting, ALL show and tell, NO business.

See you there. And let me know if you are coming — we'll be looking for you.

Sally
