create a natural colorant group? Dyestuff, Extracts and Pigments

debmcclintock's picture

Hi guys, question for you....is there any great objection if I start another group/forum for natural colorants, dyestuffs, pigments and natural extracts?  That way we could have one group that processes fiber one way and another that processes another way and we won't get confused.  I don't mind starting the other group.  I just did not want to step on any toes.  I would plan to do a couple of starting threads of natural dye venders (dyestuff or extract) and thread for teachers/workshops and a thread for links for the natural stuff.

I'm not knocking chemical stuff!  Natural dye is a chemical reaction as well but it has such a different process that I think it would be helpful to separate the two to help beginners on either process.

I'll wait a couple of days and see what the group reaction is and if I start it, I'll announce in this group what and where!  Thanks  Deb

Here's an example of my rugs done with natural extracts:

Your rugs are stunning.

Your rugs are stunning. I would be interested in natural dyes, here or elsewhere. I had hoped to use some that I have this past summer, but the weather wouldn't cooperate. I like to do stuff like that outside on my covered porch, far away from foodstuff.

Great idea!  I do both, but

Great idea!  I do both, but don't use the same part of my brain to think about them.  It would be useful to have them separated.  fyi, I found some dyestuff for sale at the NY Sheep and Wool Festival that were novel, including dandelion root.  Has anyone  had experience with that?  The vendor is from the Charlottesville VA area, and if you are interested send me a personal message and I'll forward their names.

 I really, really haven't

I really, really haven't forgotten to create the natural extract and pigment dye group but I was waiting for some of the Weavo fixes to be put in place.  Things are getting easier to move around and find things so I am thinking of creating the group after the New Year.  Maybe we can have a DAL (dye along) with natural dye extracts in March 2010!  I need to take some time to put some resource lists in place for folks to reference.  Keep an eye out for that group!

In the meantime, here is a link to my blog where I am working with some mesquite wood chip on mohair

Enjoy!  Deb

Hey Deb, Hope the forums fix

Hey Deb,

Hope the forums fix up helps with what you were looking for before adding that group.

Have you visited our advertiser Table Rock Llamas? They have amazing materials for natural dyeing. Things I've never even heard of, but I am a total novice when it comes to dyeing. Anxious to learn more and try a few things this spring.
