The Efficient Weaver

While working efficiently depends on personal abilities and disabilities, space, equipment and budget available, there are many things that one can do to work more ergonomically and efficiently.  Whether one is new or more experienced, we can all learn from one another.

I have a question about draw-in. Draw-in seems to be glazed over in most of the weaving books. I have seen the
term 'acceptable draw-in'. What would acceptable
draw-in be. Obviously if your selvedge is snapping the draw-in is too much. Is there a rule of thumb like 1"
or a percentage. I'm thinking about fine yarns not
rug weaving. I'm working on pieces for the GCW tests
and I seem to be wasting so much time fretting over the draw-in as Harriet Tidball seems to think anything over a 1/4 inch is too much. Thanks for any input.

Treadling and knees

Did you ever have this feeling that you were doing something not quite right, but couldn't figure out on your own what what might be? I'm having that experience now with my weaving.  I've been going gangbusters on weaving some silk scarves - they are so pretty, I just love the magic of making them - and have noticed that one of my knees is getting sore.  Now, why could that be?

I sit slightly off-center from my weaving - that seems to help the left-side selvedges stay more consistent, tho' maybe that's exacerbating the knee thing (it's the left knee).  I'm switching between two treadles for the left foot, two treadles for the right foot.  I pause frequently to ooh and aah over the fabric in the making.

I figure if anyone would have tips here, it'd be Laura and folks interested in more efficient (and pain-free) movement!  Suggestions?

Have you tried calculating your seat height using the Walter Turpening system that ingamarie posted here?

Sitting off-center could easily be the issue but I'd try doing all the measurements and check your seat height first.

I hadn't - I'll check that out and report back.  Thanks!

Hi Heather,

You should be sitting with your hips higher than your knees.  That way you can use your thigh muscles to push down which should take some of the pressure off your knee joint.

Hard to know the cause without seeing what you are doing, though.  :(

Cheers,

Laura
