Come meet your Weavo friends and join the fun!!
Claudia
Who's coming? I know Aunt Janet will be there on Saturday and thelmaweaves too. Sally Orgren is bringing 2 looms.
Hope to see you there! Sat and Sun 11-1pm
Rain or shine! I'm excited to make it back to MSW!
I'll be at the Festival. This will be the first time I've attended since beginning to learn to weave. I'll have an entire new set of possibilities to explore!
Deb,
I am only there on Saturday, so I'll catch up with you next weekend in NY State.
I've got a fresh warp on the Structo 240 for folks to try if they want. I am not sure if Inky will be sporting a new outfit or not. (Laverne is onto me, so I have to get busy and weave off this current band.) Can't wait to meet folks!
Hope you all will come up to the auction after 1:00. Bring goodies to sell, and $$$ to buy.
It is killing me that I can't be at the Saturday weaving auction, that is always so much fun! But I only found out the last minute that I could get there Sunday so one has to go with the flow! Enjoy the equipment auction, make sure you know what things REALLY cost or you could get caught up in the bidding frenzy!
Sorry that I can't attend the Weavolution gatherings, but I will be at the Festival all weekend. Stop by my booth, Dyed Dreams, in Barn 3, Booth 3 to say, "Hi."
Janet
I will try to remember to meet you all then. See you Saturday!!
Rena
but I won't have time to get to SW... sorry to miss seeing folks. My friend, Diane, will be going, however.
Tommye
Hey Deb, glad to hear you are able to join us.
Tommye, what a bummer, so near and unable to attend. Please ask Diane to introduce herself. I will definitely have on a Weavo t-shirt and buttons.
Janet-we'll be sure to stop by and say hello.
Coming to and entering a couple of items in the auction on Saturday.
I am getting so excited. Some of our advertisers have donated items for a raffle. Make sure you sign in at the main table and get your ticket. The raffle is by donation only, there is no fee for a ticket.
Claudia
I'm planning to come to the Festival on Saturday afternoon. I'll look for you there!
I waved a sad goodbye to Aunt Janet yesterday in Oregon. She should be in DC now as I type and is excited about seeing you all on at the Show. I can't make it this time...last year was a blast...as I am in WA state in the lovely home of Betty Davenport!
wow! Betty Davenport, our lady of Rigid Heddle! Please tell her I used her original manuscript for learning how to weave! She and David X were my mentors in print. I went to take a 4 shaft weaving class to learn how to read their comparisons to shaft looms. My classmates fell down laughing when I said I was taking a floor loom class to learn how to use my rigid heddle loom in a more efficient manner! (ummmm, this was awhile ago!)
We have some great giveaways this year! I am so excited to see all the folks who are coming. Just 3 days away!
Claudia
I've been to the fairgrounds - looks to be a great year!!! The booths have been moved around some more in the outside area - have to keep the fire marshall happy I guess. The auction tent has an amazing assortment of items. 4 H Baby Wolf, several table tops, 8 H Floor 45"??, Spining Wheels, and more spinning wheels. Hope to see some of you tomorrow.
am gonna try my best to come on sunday
WOOT
This just in from MS&W, there is a tools of the trade 8 shaft (number 73) for sale in the auction...
OMG. The tools of the trade loom sold for 550 dollars! I also saw a struct 240 in mint condition 4 shaft for 125 dollars. It's overwhelming! And I haven't even mentioned the FIBER or the meet up!
I LOVE the equipment auction. My biggest regret is the 8 shaft 60 Cranbrook that went for $500 a coule of years ago!
There were some GREAT buys - 8 Shaft Baby Wolf for ...... gulp $750 - THAT'S RIGHT.... $750. Now I have every reason to believe that if there had been someone else interested it would have brought considerably more, remember it takes 2 interested buyers to bring the price up! On the other hand, spinning wheels, Ashford Traditionals were bringing over $300 and Ashford Kiwi well, a new one would have been less money. All in all we had a Great time. Thanks to all who came. See you on the grounds tomorrow.
We had a wonderful time at the Meetup today. Thanks to Janet, Sally and Kim for all their assistance! What a team.
We raffled 6 items including gifts from Glimakra, Weavolution t-shirts, a thumb drive and Weavo market bags.
Join us again tomorrow at the Rabbit building from 11-1pm. We'll demo Weavolution and chat weaving, weaving, weaving.
A special thanks to Sally for bringing looms, projector and a smiley face.
Claudia
Just a quick note to say that it was wonderful to meet all of you.....Janet, Kim, and Claudia! I thoroughly enjoyed the festival and the chance to chat with you in person. Thanks also for the market bag! :)
Till next time,
Cindy
well, obviously I didn't make it there today, but I will be there tomorrow. See ya then.
Team Weavo multi-tasking at the Maryland Sheep & Wool Festival! Okay, my bad. I was having so much fun talking to the weavers who showed up, I forgot to take photos. (I think we all did!)
Sally
By the time I left at 3:00, a lot of the attendees couldn't keep their hands out of their purchase bags, and were sitting in the shade trying out their new fiber toys. I still had a 4+ hour ride home ahead of me, and have not yet figured out how to weave and drive. (Why don't they have Bluetooth for that?)
Before driving down to the fest, I thought that since I am primarily a weaver (and not so much a spinner or knitter), I could be very focused in my purchases, since the fest seems more concentrated on those two audiences.
So it came as a great surprise to ME that I ended up purchasing a new drop spindle from The Spanish Peacock, and a bag of irresistible wool-silk to spin from Bullen's Woolens. (Both vendors are located in the Main Exhibition Hall.) I think Elisa subliminally influenced me at the Meet Up with her precision spinning.
What goodies did everyone else find?

I always knew that spinning was in your future. You've got too much of the good stuff at home to not have it take a hold of you! I have a beautiful turkish spindle from Spanish Peacock. It spins wonderfully. I hope you enjoy yours.
Alison
Okay. I too, could not keep my hands off the goodies!

Spanish Peacock .22 oz drop spindle:I was intrigued by the pig-tail hook at the top (a quick loop and ready to go, no winding several times) and the tip, which fits my fingers perfectly to give it a whirl. My Bosworth has a plain blunt pointed shaft, and Golding has groves. The one thing I found more difficult with this spindle is that the shaft is SO smooth, there is no tooth for the yarn to grip when you initially start spinning. But as you can see, I figured that one out! ($40) Burled maple. This is not the only style they sell. The fiber is 75% leicester, 25% silk, and spins as nicely as some angora I recently finished! The company was Bullen's Woolens. Both were vendors at Maryland Sheep and Wool Show.(And if you can't see the thread on the spindle, the answer is yes, I DO like to spin very fine.)Sally
I will look for a spindle today. Or at least a new shaft for my amber bead. I forgot to leave it at home when I visited the Capitol Building the other day. It was a sharp stick that wasn't allowed to go in there. I wanted to leave it somewhere and pick it up later, but the guards said "no" to that. It was a split shaft made by Alden Amos. The sour grapes part was that it was broken at one end, so I was planning to replace it anyway. I'll order a couple when I return to California. I have a few knitting needle spares, so I'm not without, but I want to see what folks are selling as fine spindles out here.
My thanks to all who came and all who helped out. It was a great way to spend Mother's Day (shhh, don't tell my sons : )

Hey guys, I told you I'd figure out what username I had. Gee, it's my real name, imagine that. Nice to see you all this weekend, it was a blast, and you all put a bee in my bonnet (straw hat?). I've been eyeing my MDSW spinning purchases and pondering drafts. Thanks!
Great picture! Is it really tshirt weather over there? Not so here in Oregon. I am heading east tomorrow...Boston via Dallas...overnight in Dallas.
Was happy to see Claudia and Janet yesterday and to meet Auntie Janet and others
I walked around 3 times and was very good.
Almost purchased that Tri-loom cold by Hillcreek Fiber Studio
Also almost purchased items to start spinning (next year)
only a Clittle fiber and a set of those signature knitting needles
Cant wait till next year
Becky
I hadn't attended MSWF for several years. When I used to go regularly, my favorite thing to do was to find vendors who were selling mill ends. As we all know, there used to be a lot more than you'll find today. However, I saw three vendors at this year's show who offered mill ends. I wanted to post here, so that NEXT year, I'll remember where to look!
-The Wool Room (otherwise known as Shel B. Yarns, NY) He is known for carrying metallics, and poly-blends. He also had some super-fine cones, like sewing thread or finer.
-Davidson Mill Yarn (Eaton Rapids, MI) They had several of those cone trees where you just had to give them a spin and see what was there.
-Knots & Treadles (Peggy, from western PA). When traveling for work, I used to visit Peggy's shop outside of Pittsburgh, and many of her mill ends were the basis for my beginning stash. I was delighted to see her at Rhinebeck in the fall of 2010, where I found the just-perfect shuttle for one of my low-shed looms. You never know what she'll have from venue to venue, it's like visiting a weaver's garage sale. Besides used weaving tools and odds and ends of yarn, this year she had some woven sample collections which caught my eye, and I always check out the used books she brings, because you never know...
Did anyone else see any other vendors they want to "bookmark" for Rhinebeck, or the next MSWF?
It was fun to see everyone on Sunday at MSW. I got to meet Aunt Janet and see some of her backstrap work up close and personal. It was great! I was only at MSW for half a day so I had to really push thru the vendors and dream. I did check out JOY, one of the Weavo venders and left them some $$$$$. Their "secret" box of weaving yards was FUN to burrow thru! Always ask about their weaving box when you see them at a knitting conference! The Weavolution folks were hard at work greeting folks and handing out doorprizes. I was excited that they still had some of their logo microvaults. I missed them last year. I am up in Canada now helping deliver/construct an AVL and then we head over to Clayton, New York to the Handweaving Museum. I'll meet up with Sally and we'll go back in time at the Historic Weaving Conference! First up, an indigo workshop. Yahoo! (Sally, I saw mordanting supplies at MSW, I hope you found them on Saturday!) regards Deb Mc
