Hi, I have a question for more experienced weavers out there. I have a project in mind using sock yarn and weaving a scarf in a simple twill weave, the problem is I don't have the yarn I want for the weft in my stash and I wondered how many 100g skeins of sock yarn would be needed for a 5" scarf.
Any suggestions will be helpful and thank you, String
Hi Stringthing!
I've made a few scarves useing sock yarn. When I do a scarf like this I'm pretty loose with my yardage. I use one skein for the warp and one skein for the weft. I wind on a 2 yard warp and weave until I run out of yarn or warp which ever comes first. Most of the time I have weft left over. You should be fine with one skein.
Hope this helps.
What you want to do is figure out how wide the scarf is (5 inches) factor how long the actual weft thread will be (to include weavers angle and takeup) multiply that by the number of pics in one inch, then multiple that number by the number of inches you are weaving, then divide that number by 36 to get yardage. I have created an online pdf warp/weft calculator, that will help do the math - you enter a few fields and the pdf does the math! - Warp and Weft Calculator A-Z
Thank you guys! I'll be hopefully starting this soonish.
