I recently purchased a used Leclerc 36inch Artisat and am getting ready to warp it for the first time. I have the original Leclerc book but don't find the warping instructions to be clear. What is the best resource for this information. unfortunately there are no classes I can take advantage of. Do I need a warping board or can I warp directly as with my Harp? Thanks for any help you can provide.

Warping Back to Front:

Warping Back to Front:

You'll probably want a warping frame to measure your warping needs. After you're finished winding your warp, the next steps are to place the lease sticks in the lease cross and suspend the warp on your loom behind the heddles. A raddle is essential for wider warps. As you beam your warp, I use craft paper to separate the layers of warp. There are some great new books that have recently been published. I'd suggest getting your hands on one of these newer books and read all about it.

It's not really something that can be answered in an email. But as you do it, post and I know you'll receive many helpful answers.

Check out Debbie Chandler,

Check out Debbie Chandler, Learning to Weave. Also, Cay Garrett, Warping by Yourself. I thought both had very good illustrations. Jump in and check back if you have more questions!

If you have the warping pegs

If you have the warping pegs that came with your Harp, turn it over and use it as a warping board.  New Voyager Trading probably has a YouTube video to help with this.

Most of the teachers on Cyber-Fiber will arrange a private online, live class with you if you email or PM them.

This is a video clip showing how I wind a warp on a warping board.  I have more video clips on my channel that you may find helpful.

Lots of hints and tips on my blog http://laurasloom.blogspot.com

cheers,

without a warping board

You can improvise with pegs or chairs that have posts that stick up.  Place the chairs (or clamp the pegs) the distance apart that you want the warp length.  Walk back and forth winding the warp, being sure to make a cross on one end as shown in the references above.  My blind student found the chair method simpler to follow than the warping board, and it gives a lot of exercise!  I have seen old barns in New England with pegs set into the walls for winding in this way.

A warping board is faster and easier, and easier and faster still is a warping reel.

videos

In addition to the books mentioned, a few videos I found helpful are:

Syne Mitchell's presention on dressing a loom (free) http://www.mefeedia.com/watch/35003147

And Interweave's Warping Your Loom dvd. I purchased the download, so I could watch it on my laptop.

Have fun!

Yes, you can direct warp your loom

Hi Michiele,

You asked if you could direct warp your loom and yes, you can.  I have written instructions for how to do this, so if you write to me directly I can send a file for how to do this.

Thanks to all

Thanks to everyone for the wonderful information. I am going to order the DVDs. This is such a great site and you are all so helpful! My husband is helping me re-furnish this 30 year old treasure and I hope to warp it next weekend.
