I am working on my first weft-faced sampler from Weft-faced Pattern Weaves: Tabby to Taqueté by Nancy Arthur Hoskins. I have read and re-read the instructions. Is it best to cut off weft threads at each color change or carry the colors up the side of the sampler? I haven't found a good way to carry the yarn and still have the selvedges look good. Any suggestions would be appreciated! Thanks, Cathy
Hi Cathy,
I just started this as well and didn't see anything specific in the book about carrying the yarn or not. One paragraph did mention not to carry a color more than a couple of rows.
I'm stopping and starting each color change for the accent and outline colors and carrying the background color. At each outline section that divides the different patterns the background color is carried up three passes. It doesn't look too bad.
What looks bad on mine is the selvedges with the pick and pick. I having trouble getting the selvedges to come out with the right color.
Good luck on the sampler. Post a picture if you have the time. I put one in of the one I'm doing in the project section.
I find that wrapping the two wefts around each other at the selvedge tends to 'lock' them into place. You just have to figure out which looks better, clock wise or anti-clockwise. Sometimes it works better one direction on one side and the other on the other selvedge....
cheers,
Laura
Thanks for the helpful responses. I have been locking the weft colors and that seems to help my selvedges. I decided to try carrying the accent on one side of the sampler and the border color on the other side. If I tug the color to the back, the carried color seems to disappear. My selvedges seem to be getting a bit better.
