I'm having trouble wraping my brain around how to do this... I just finshed a satin/sateen scarf using 5-shafts and I want to do another one. However with this one, the edges curled. I read in Sharon Alderman's wonderful "Mastering Weave Structures" book (page 69), that this problem can be fixed by adding separately beamed and threaded basketweave selvedge. I know how to separately beam it, but what I can't wrap my brain around this morning is the threading on 5 shafts so the edges get caught when I am just lifting one shaft at a time.
Any advice will be greatly appreciate! Holly
Yes, satin will curl. But if you steam press it lightly with a pressing cloth, it will lie flat. Joanne
Holly,
Did you figure this out? You wouldn't be able to lift only one shaft at a time - you'd be treadling the selvage at the same time as you are treadling the satin.
We can work it out if it is still foggy in your brain.
Alison
How many shafts/treadles do you have to work with? The curl should come out during wet finishing, especially if you apply a hard press.
Cheers,
Laura
I did figure it out...I did a little draft and realized how to do it. Nothing like seeing it on paper! I'm working on my 8-shaft Fireside. I'm just finishing the second mobius (okay faux mobius) from the current warp. I'm not going to put on the next warp until after I wash and hard press these two. If they flatten okay then I going to skip the basketweave selvedge. You can sorta see the curl in this photo. thanks for your help, Holly

Good News! washed and hard pressed them and the edges are now flat! YEA!
Hi Holly,
That's great news. Please let us know when you have pictures and details posted in your Projects area.

Good-oh. Nothing like a good result. :)
cheers,
Laura
Laura, I followed your wet finising instructions and got fabulous results.
Holly
I haven't twisted the ends yet, but here's a sneak preview. The edges are lovely and flat :-)
