I just started weaving some white cotton bath towels and realized that I'm getting rust stains on about 3 inches on each edge. I had not woven anything this wide for awhile & didn't realize the reed had rusted on the edges. Does anyone have a suggestion for how to remove the rust stains after the towels are removed from the loom?
It's a liquid in a dark bronze plastic bottle, or was years ago. It's pretty effective; just be sure to monitor the progress closely and start rinsing it out as soon as the rust disappears, because it's a strong chemical (can't remember if it's acid or base, but it's strong). Good luck.
Thank you! I'll see if I can find it. Hopefully it won't be too strong for the fabric. It's going to be a gift and I don't want to ruin it, although the rust is ruining it right now!
Or you could try http://www.universityproducts.com/ they are a archival product company, not expensive, they might have some thing. Good luck!
Thank you, Cathie,
I emailed them and explained my problem~~they're not available by phone on a Saturday. Hopefully they'll have something that will work.
Thanks again!
ZUD is a scouring powder for rust stains in sinks and the like. It is oxalic acid. I've used it on cotton garments that had rust stains from safety pins. Just dab it on damp, don't scour, and rinse as soon as the stain disappears, then launder.
Thank you for the tip! I've heard of Zud, but never knew you could use it on fabrics.
I finished the towels and used Whink on the rust~~it took it right out! Thank you, everyone, for your suggestions.
