Hi.. I just received the Kromski Harp (32") for Christmas and after a practice warping and weaving session, have begun my first real project. I am using some pearl cotton I have on hand and am enjoying the weaving immensely. As I come to the end of my warp, I am thinking about my next project...
I would like to make a baby blanket but I am unsure as to what type of yarn I should use. The pearl cotton is too slippery, I can easily see baby fingers and toes snagging. What suggestions do you have for an easy care and soft yarn choice? In addition, I live overseas (APO, AE) and must mail order... can you suggest online 'shops' where I can find cone yarns?
Finally... Can you suggest a weave other than plain weave that can be done on a single heddle reed but won't produce lofty floats? (Again, thinking about baby fingers and toes).
Many Thanks ^_^
Kerrie
Kerrie, Happy New Year! There has been a lot on baby blanket yarn here. Please go to the top right side and put baby blanket in the search block. Where are you located? Here are some web sites I use for cone yarn. There are others and some can be found w/ads here on this web site

You could make a lovely baby blanket out of a fingering weight yarn like Dale of Norway's Baby Ull. It's a superwash wool and extremely soft. I haven't done one yet with this yarn but it's on my list. I've also made a shawl from knitpicks palette and fulled it just a bit to make it very soft and fluffy, but it's not washable and a lot of new moms would prefer a washable blanket.
I think a 3/2 cotton would also make a lovely baby blanket, especially given the huge variety of colors. Also, there's a slubby cotton called "Noho" that works great on the RH.
You can find most of these yarns it at http://www.yarnbarn-ks.com and http://www.yarn.com (the knitpicks one of course is http://www.knitpicks.com).
Carrie.
Welcome Kerrie,
Did you find the Kromski RH group, it's here. Also, there is a list of advertisers who support Weavolution in the Resources section of the website here. Click on any one of the names and it takes you to their website. Halcyon Yarn, the Woolery, Woolgatherers, Glimakra all have great yarn selections. If you call, most have staff happy to help you choose a suitable yarn for a baby blanket.
I made two baby blankets last year and used 3/2 cotton for warp and washable wool/bamboo for weft. Both were very soft and washed and dried in the machine.
Happy weaving and welcome to Weavolution.
