I am using 3/2 pearl cotton making hucklace place mats what is the best way to join my weft from bobin to bobbin
I think the best way is to split both ends and let the two halves overlap, so you won't get a bump in you material. The other two halves can be left on the surface and carefully cut off later. (I hope I have explained this so you can picture it ?!)
will you notice a splice in the final project with this "1/2 lap joint"? do this onth edge or in the middle?
I don't think it would be noticable. You would end up with a small area where half of one tread and half of the other lie neatly next to each other and look like a normal pick. However I try to do such things descretely to one side just in case :-)
prob. wouldn't be noticeable, but if you put it near the selvage it may be a bit stronger. One thing I find that helps is to poke the loose thread down to the wrong side of the fabric (assuming you weave right side up). There always seems to be a little 'thing' left when I cut that end off, especially with thicker threads.
Thanks for the help Ellen it looks allot better than what I was doing. I was working the loose ends along the salvage, but that made my salvage feally rough. this is my first project using a cotton weft the prevous projects I have done with cotton warp and my handspun wool and alpaca and I just felted the ends together
Well good luck with it. What are you weaving?
The handspun wool and alpaca sounds great. Are you going to show us some of your previous weavings? I love alpaca.
I posted my last project in "my Stuff" last
Thanks, I have just seen it. Lovely.
It turned out great I put a dab of fray-check on the joints
