How best to learn how to draft a weaving pattern?

Hi~

Wondering if there is anyone out there who could offer any suggestions on a good tutorial site on how to draft weaving patterns.  I am interested in examining different weaving structures and while reading Sharon Alderman's book "Mastering Weaving Structures" and would like to really understand the draft.  I am also going to work on samples/project in each of the weave structures class as I read the book (plain, twill, satin, etc...) but really feel like there is a gap in my understanding because I cannot draw a draft on my own.  Ultimately I would like to be able to look at a swatch of fabric with a magnifying lens and be able to draw out the draft.

Anyone have any suggestions?  Thanks so much...

Knowing how to draft is

Knowing how to draft is definitely the key to learning weave structures. Get a pad of graph paper and a pencil with a good eraser. I suggest starting here, with this handout from long-term teacher and writer Eleanor Best (from the Indiana Weavers website):
http://www.weavingindiana.org/PDFs/Elean...
Eleanor has retired from teaching weaving and has generously posted many of her very clear handouts on various weaving topics here. There are some very clear explanations and illustrations in books - Chandler, Black, Frey, Tovey, Piroch, etc. or try old articles from weaving newsletters at handweaving.net.

When you have that part figured out, search on "fabric analysis" to learn how to work from cloth back to the draft.

Ask questions - many of us can help you.

Just went to the site and did

Just went to the site and did a quick skim of the PDF...looks like exactly what I need.  I think working off of graph paper is a very good idea...slower and just a little more "hands on".  Plus I don't have weaving software so I have no choice  LOL.

Very good suggestion...thanks !

if you don't want to work on

if you don't want to work on graph paper consider using excel, you can set the grid as squares and use fill background with your colors.  You can then cut and paste rows to make your treadlings......once you get the hang of it it goes fairly quickly.

For simple but good weaving

For simple but good weaving software check out Weave Design available from the Pike's Peak Weavers Guild in Colorado Springs Colorado.  Just search for "PPWG Colorado" and you will find them.

Best of all the program is free!

One of my favorite books on the subject is "Mastering Weave Structures" by Sharon Alderman.  It is available from many sources, possibly even your guild or local public library if you are lucky!

I love weave structures and can spend hours experimenting with new structures.

Another free dowload program

Another free dowload program is D-B Weave. It has some limitations but is a great help in planning a design.

Designing with Blocks or

Designing with Blocks or Pattern Techniques for Handweavers (both by Doramay Keasbey) are a good next step from Alderman. Doramay writes clearly and well and has some of the best information for weavers around.
