I am currently exploring four selvedge warping for tapestry, using Susan Martin Maffei's instructions form the Brennan/Maffei website and the instructional DVD "Woven Tapestry Techniques" that Archie Brennan & Susan Maffei have produced. I posted about my first attempts to Tapestry Share blog today: http://tapestryshare.blogspot.com/2011/06/more-on-four-selvedge-adventure.html

This is a little different than the technique for 4 selvage weaving in the Andes, but of course they use a body-tensioned loom and get a warp faced cloth. Oddly is seems related to their discontinous warp techique but they weave on both sides of the dovetail, warp-faced again.
Nice!
I've been planning to try do scaffold warp on backstrap loom.
You make this look simple.
Have a good day!
Preparing a scaffold (or discontinuous) warp for a warp faced piece for the backstrap loom is quite easy.
The hard, or rather, the tedious part is ''closing" the gap when you weave in from both ends in order to have four selvedges. I have done this on my Navajo weavings but it is more difficult on warp faced pieces. Take my advice and do it with wool...NOT with cotton as I tried on my first attempt. After struggling with closing the gap in cotton, it almost seemed easy doing it the next time with wool!
I can't get my photos to upload today for some reason so if you would like to see pictures of this you can look here at a project or here for a description and lots of pictures of the entire process (scroll down to the last half of the blog post).

6 pm: Attempt to post a picture which was uploaded in February and which is stored in my file here on Weavolution: success. This would not work this morning.
This is a picture of the dovetail system used to create multiple four- selvedge panels.
6 pm: Attempt to upload a photo from my desktop: still fails.

I still can't upload a picture form my desktop. The above picture in post #4 was uploaded in February and I posted it here from my Weavo file.
