Not sure what happen or why the my first post is locked. I have stumbled across parts to a sears fairloom. Does anyone here know anything about them? Their history?  If I counted right the loom is a 4H 6T. Was it considered a rug loom? I have heard of many other kinds of old rug looms but not this one. How popular were they? Are a there many of them still around? Has anyone here wove on one?

Thanks for any info you can share.

 I helped the Ponca City

I helped the Ponca City Pioneer Woman museum refinish one of those looms.  Oklahoma had just come into statehood in about 1907 and this was one of the looms brought into that area.  The loom was sold thru the Sears Catalog, we found the advertisement and it was put with the loom historical information.  There were not many roads developed into the Oklahoman territory prior to statehood so many catalog orders were brought in via train thru Wichita and than brought down south via wagon.

I think if you go to the patent books in a library you can probably track down some user information.  That is what we did with our loom.

This took place around 1987/88, Laura, the curator, passes away of cancer shortly after I left in 1991.  I think that the rug loom and the Sears loom are still in use in the museum.  I've heard rumors that they still were demoing on those looms since folks did weave before and during early statehood.   I've never been able to circle back and see how things are going over 20 years later.  Deb Mc

added later....here is a link to the musem    The Giant rug loom was the first loom we refurbished and the Sears loom was the second loom.  I don't know if the Sears loom is still there....

Liza, Sorry your first

Liza,

Sorry your first attempt to post was locked.  Since you reposted, which I am glad you did, I deleted the first attempt.

Unfortunately, this happens at times and may be in the code.

Janet Meany (in Duluth, MN)

Janet Meany (in Duluth, MN) is the historic and off-beat (okay, weavers joke there! ; - ) rug loom guru. She operates the weaver's friend website. She has helped put me in touch with other owners and operators of another unusual loom, manufactured in the Midwest.
