I recently purchased a used Leclerc Meco 4 shaft Jack Loom. I finally worked up my nerve to thread it yesterday with Sugar 'n Cream to try some dishcloths to get the feel of the loom as I have never used one. Doing plain weave, before threading I made sure my treadle tie ups were 1 &3 on one treadle and 2 & 4 on another one. Now when I go to get started and I push the 1 & 3 treadle 1 & 3 go up but 2 & 4 also go part way up. It's the same when I push the treadle I have tied up as 2 & 4. Can any one help this newbie?
Thanks!
Peg
Peg, you can go here to down load a manual for your Meco loom. It sounds like your frames are rubbing each other.Put a heavy book (or have someone hold down the threadle)on your threadle and then take a look see to see if anything is touching/rubing. Check everything that moves.

Thanks Michael, the link gives me a denied message. I will go to the website and look and do some more investigating on the loom to see if anything is catching or rubbing.
I tried the main site early this morning, maybe too much snow in Canada (g)
I don't know maybe this is not the kind of loom for me. I don't see anything catching or rubbing and prior to threading it lifted the shafts correctly. Could I have threaded it wrong? I took a thread and went back through 1,2,3,4 and did that all the way across with each thread.
Peg, lift 2,4 and when 1,3 comes up, look and see if you did in fact thead the wrong heddle. It happens. Cheryl was weaving towels for an exchange and had a threading error. This after weaving for 33 years. It happens, not offen but it does happen. Even a twist in your warp yarn would cause this problem. How did you slay your reed? Peg, you can also try rethreadling your loom. To a straight tieup. Then see what happens. You are learning, enjoy the adventure.
I sleyed the reed every other slot
Good, sometimes when weavers more put then one warp yarn in each slot of the reed you can get this problem. Peg, where do you live? I can give you a list of guilds in your area.
The web site is up right now. Try this http://www.leclerclooms.com/draw_inst/da_meco.PDF
Michael
I live about 150 miles away from the Minnesota Guild here so with our winter weather is not an option. I am pretty sure I have it threaded wrong so for right now I'm going to warp up my rigid heddle and use this one to hang clothes on until I figure out what I am doing wrong! lol Thank you for all your help this morning Michael!
I have the Leclerc info printed it off, doesn't give me a lot to go on. Hubby used it to put the loom together when I got it. I guess I need to do some more reading and learning before I try doing anything more with this loom.
A Meco was the first loom Cheryl owned. From there she went to a Newcomb studio loom and never looked back at that table loom. We now have 5 looms and I am going after a 48 inch 8H Macomber this sat depending on the weather. You can see some of the looms here www.handweaver.us
Peg, I went back an reread your posting. You stated that you tied 1/3 to "One" threadle? It may work but if this is the same Meco table loom Cheryl had, it is a direct tieup. If you want 1/3 you have to push down the 1 & 3 handle??
Michael
Here is a list of guilds, maybe one is closer?
What beautiful looms used to create gorgeous items! VERY VERY talented! I was just pleased to have nice straight selvages on my last scarf! lol I will get this loom figured out. Since I started weaving just a couple of months ago I love it so I will keep at it until I can use the darn thing.
Maybe I'm misunderstanding - you write: " I took a thread and went back through 1,2,3,4 and did that all the way across with each thread."
*If* this means that your warp threads go through 4 heddles, then you have done it wrong - each thread should go through only one heddle.
Kerstin in Sweden (with no experience of jack looms...)
Kerstin,
That is exactly what I did and I sat and looked at it and slapped my forehead in disbelief! This is the first time I have attempted to use this loom and it finally dawned on me it was how I threaded it. So, I'm in the process of re-threading. This was my trial run, so I live and learn. Thank you very much for your input!!!
Thanks Kerstin, I missed that. Peg, I am certain "U" will not make that mistake again. Thanks, for the nice comments, you will find weaving on a floor loom goes way faster then on a table loom. There are looms of used looms in your part of the country.
Michael
Oh, I know I won't make that mistake again! It only takes me 1 time to have to redo something and I learn quick! When I got this Mecco it was on a floor stand with a treadle system with it and I snagged it off of Craig's list hopefully I will be able to learn with it. I find it so relaxing to come home from work and weave. I'm interested in doing pieces for when we do period re-enactment going back to the mountain man days. I'm hoping to make a shawl for when summer gets here and the rendezvous start. I envy you living in Georgia! We are in the middle of a snowstorm today with a forecast of 10 inches by the time tomorrow morning comes. Means I'll be out blowing snow tomorrow night when I get home from work. Thanks again for all your help Michael! This is such a nice group, everyone is so helpful and us newbies need all the help we can get! lol
I will rub it in (g) we had two days in the 70fs this weekend. Have a break in the rain right now so I am off to give the horses hay. Peg, do me a favor keep the snow up your way.
Michael
Yea!!!!!!! Got my loom re-threaded and re-sleyed and now it works just dandy. Getting a great shed! Thank you Michael for your time and assistance and thank you Kerstin for lending me a hand as well!
Since you were so helpful Michael I'll try and keep the snow up this direction but should you ever want some just say the word as I have a lot of extra that I would be most happy to share! :)
