in the Chat forum, any acrylic yarn weavers thread - post # 36, poster has only just joined a few minutes ago, and the link to the website may be problematic.
Thanks Caroline - I'm on it!
Alison, check out the for sale spam.
Michael
Got it Michael. Thank you.
Claudia
There was another one in "Sett for Slippery yarns". I've taken care of it.
Tien
Yay, spam busters!
A spammer commented on one of my projects here: http://www.weavolution.com/node/7027. It might be nice as a feature to get a button to report and/or delete spam from our own project pages.
I just took care of it. Criminey - to compare your gorgeous towels to cheap ones. That is low even for a spammer.
Love the towels.
Alison
now, I wish I had seen the spam (-;
now we have a closet spammer, McDaddy:
and he's posted in the backstrap forum as well.
Doesn't do personal calls to OZ unfortunately.......would have been fun!
I deleted the first one, thanks for the help finding it. I cannot find the post in the Backstrap forum. Can you give me the link please.
Thanks, Caroline
Never mind, I found it and Poof, dust.
post # 4 on this thread appears to be SPAM-provides a link to a totally urelated service.
Laverne
Thanks for catching that one Laverne. Why do people try this? And to put it there of all places.
I was out for a short time, we haven't been able to get groceries for a while so things are finally plowed and melted enough to get out today.
Hope you are warm!
Claudia
there was a rash of people a while back trying to get into Yahoo groups! I run the "structo" group and a couple of others. You can often pick up on the generalized nature of the request and the bad English:
"please to join your lovely group which I very want to know members thank you"
was the "classic" there were variations.
I get kind of ticked-off when somebody tries to get into my group just to sell some stuff then resigns. I try to keep a look-out for that and bounce them, nicely, explaining that, if they put it on ebay or elsewhere, I am happy to post a link and heads-up.

Alison here - I'm on my way there now.
Taken care of - thanks for letting us know!

Post #13 in Welcome, share what you weave on! in Fans of the Spinning Loft.
Thanks for finding this one. Sneaky little buggers. I'll delete it and block the user.
Claudia
spam here....www.weavolution.com/node/4757
Thanks Deb. I took care of it, and the user, too.
Claudia
Yes, thanks. I deleted it and blocked the "user". This is so annoying.
I appreciate all the help finding these nasty interruptions to our website. They seem to come in bunches.
Claudia
Thanks Laverne, I just saw this. The last 5 spam messages have been from users with email addresses at www.mail15.com.
Does anyone know anything about this server? This is what I have found out about them. Any other information is greatly appreciated. These spammers are getting under my skin. I'm so annoyed and there is little more we can do.
www.mail15.com ("Ranet.Ru") has one IP number , which is the same as for mail15.com, but the reverse is pochta.ru.
nm.ru, pop3.ru, land.ru, smtp.ru, pisem.su and at least 52 other hosts point to the same IP.
mail15.com is a domain controlled by three nameservers at pochta.ru. All of them are on different IP networks. Incoming mail for mail15.com is handled by one mailserver also at pochta.ru.
You might also be interested in mail15.su and mail333.com.
www.mail15.com is ranked #3305969 world wide as mail15.com and is hosted on a server in Russian Federation. It has gained 67 inlinks over a period of seven years. It has 3 organic keywords.
Trustworthiness, vendor reliability, privacy and child safety of this site is unsatisfactory. (more on reputation). It is blacklisted in three lists.
Thanks for helping find these bogus posts.
Claudia
Yikes, this one isn't even a Russian Spammer.
Thanks, s/he is toast!!
Claudia
Spammed here this morning. http://www.weavolution.com/node/8808#comment-17451
Thank you. It's my newest morning ritual. Check for Spam.
I appreciate all the extra eyes on this topic. Keep up the good work, I couldn't do it without you.
Claudia
Thanks Franco. I came, I saw, I deleted. And I got rid of the user too.
Have a nice day, I appreciate your keen eye.
Claudia
Thank you for dealing with them promptly.
This is one of the few forums I've ever seen where bug squashing and spam kicking is part of the fun!
Have a joyful day!
I have a message board online (www.beautyandspirit.com). We were having lots of problems with spammers, so I started requiring approval of all new registrations. After they confirm their email, they have to wait for a moderator to approve them. We run the IPs and decline all those from Russia and other places where spammers come from. So far it has worked like a charm - we haven't had any more spammers!
Thank you for the suggestion. We have it under control.
Claudia, Weavolution co-founder
I didn't mean to be a buttsinsky! Sorry!!
Blanket disapproval of persons from a certain country is possibly NOT in the best interests of the group.
I personally know of one Weavo member from Moscow, Russia - who purchased a loom from us with excellent weaverly correspondence - and validated herself over the forum.
If there is to be "validation" - how about keeping it friendly by sending the applicant a return request(could be a form email) about their weaving activities - and if nothing that makes sense comes in, they are blocked???
You certainly weren't a buttsinsky! Spam is an on going problem and we welcome ideas about how to deal with it. And I had no idea one could easily trace an IP to its country!
Our thoughts right now are that we have well over 5000 users now and have several people joining every day. We are an international group, so we don't want to exclude possible members from any country just because a number of spammers originate from there. We've found, for example, that a number of our spam posts originated from India and you know what a deep spinning and weaving tradition they have!
With so many joining, it isn't practical for us to request more information from new users about their weaving. Weavolution is all volunteer and we're stretched too thin as it is. And as some of our members don't speak English, I'm not sure how good a job we'd do.
Right now, it is more efficient for us to remove the occasional spam that gets posted. There hasn't been that much as evidenced by the number of posts to this thread. I like Franco's comment from a few days ago - it is kind of fun to see what spammers post (the car one just had me laughing!) and then to squash them.
Thanks all of you for your comments and thoughts. If spamming becomes a bigger issue, we have these suggestions to help us make a decision about how to deal with it. Virtually all of our changes are based on the input of our users and we take them very seriously.
In the meantime, if someone would like to take on removing spam and monitoring the spam situation, we'd love to add a new person to our small cadre of volunteers.
Alison
more spam - see http://www.weavolution.com/node/7048?#new
Thanks Tien, I got it.
Claudia
Hi Caroline,
I forgot to tell you that I squished that bug. Really, does spam ever work?!
Thanks for spotting it.
Alison
Actually, spam works for the spammer.
If they send a million emails and a get positive result from 3 or 4 people, that would be considered success.
The fact they have annoyed most of a million people is just freedom of expression.
Have a good day!
Thanks Caroline. They get a 6 hour jump on me on the other side of the World.
I saw that user name and wondered if it could be junk. Sure enough, the link was bogus.
Claudia
Must be bug season again!
Rag Rug Weaving forum/weft material
Do we qualify for a bonus can of fly spray?
Hi Caroline,
I have a feeling she meant to add more to the post and didn't. Most spam is posted within hours of joining the website and this user joined last August and is a member of a couple groups and has gone to the trouble of adding a "favorite".
I sent her a PM to ask her to add more to the thread so we understand a bit more about why she left that link on the thread about weft material. I'm inclined to wait and she if she contacts me or adds more information about her post.
Thanks for continuing to check. I really appreciate the help.
Claudia
As for the bug spray, we must first pass the one year mark, have a minimum of a dozen bugs/day. Hoping for improvement on the bugs when we have the upgraded site : )
Another one - they never give up!
Squashed!!! Thanks, Caroline. You are the queen of spam-finding it, that is.
But, how did they create that user name:
www.weavolution.com/user/6012
Very strange.
Claudia

Thanks Jeannine. I'll keep an eye on things. As you say, it looks as though it might be spam. We'll see how it goes.
Claudia
here it is
Hopefully, these are happening less and less. That one was odd.
Claudia
Well, here's a new one...sneaky, sneaky...a spam group!
