I'm starting a thread for folks with etsy stores. I'd love to know what other folks have out there! I have a small shop with some pin-drafted roving, both natural and dyed, and some of my handspun.

Oh yeah - Etsy questions - I have a few.... I am interested in Etsy but have a hard time understanding how the seller figures out shipping costs. There is so much "help" info on Etsy and if you are not really computer savy it is hard to know where to turn for questions. I have read so much info on the site it has all turned to mush and I cannot figure out what to do - so basically I don't do anything. Want shop on Etry, but don't understand the finer points of figuring out shipping and how the whole thing works.

OK, this is probably more than you want to know, but I remember how it felt a few years ago when I went through this same stage of selling online.
I have a website and a shop on both Etsy and Artfire. I normally ship my hand painted fibers and yarns by priority mail for a flat rate at the current cost of the 1 oz - 1 lb domestic priority mail. I have chosen to not charge fees for additional items as the shipping costs don't increase until you get to 4 or more items (most of mine are 4 oz for each item) and at that point I decided that not charging the additional cost could be passed on as a multi-item discount. For international, I normally ship using first Class International (a bit of a pain since you have to go to the Post Office and stand in line to use this shipping method. Priority Mail, Express Mail and Domestic First Class and Pacel Post can be done online, but not First Class international). Any other international shipping method using makes the cost of shipping more than the cost of the purchase. For international, I usually set up the countrry as I get a request to ship there and I base the first item shipping cost on the cost for 1 item (and packaging) and then each additional item is the average cost to add the weight of an additional item to the package. I normally average this over the changes to add between 1 and 5 items.
It is very confusing at first, but after a while you start to understand how much the shipping will increase for different weights so when a new item is added that is a different weight, you can base how much to add for additional items on how the weight of the new item compares to items that you have already shipped.
If you use the Post Office they will provide the boxes free of charge for Priority and express mail and the customs for to stick on First Class packages through their website.
I have found that the small (number 0) bubble mailers weigh only about 1.5 oz, the medium (number 2) bubble mailers are only about 2 oz, the larger (number 5) bubble mailers are about 3 oz in weight. I buy these at an office supply store or preferably at a wholesale club store such as Costco or Sam's.
In the boxes from the PO, the small video boxes only weigh about 2 oz, the larger are not much heavier, the 7x7X6 boxes are about 4 oz, the 7X6X12 boxes that are the new small flat rate boxes weigh about 5 oz. Over that size I have sold more than 1.5 lb of yarn or fiber and frequently I will start checking between the Post Office and UPS. The rates between 2 lb an 8 lb keep fluctuating as to which shipper is the most cost effective to use. Over 10 lb it is almost always better to ship by UPS.
I have an etsy store.... been with them since almost the beginning. What a great place!

I just started my etsy store last week, and am still getting my work up and into it. I've been selling by word of mouth for awhile now, but decided to take the plunge to on-line stuff. Handwoven items, handspun yarn, felted items, beaded jewelry, and I'll get some of my gourds up there in a bit too. I'm having fun. :)

I'm planning a big update later this month for those who want to plan ahead for winter spinning and weaving projects. Hand dyed fibres, hand spun yarn and coming soon some kits and original designs. Hope you'll stop by!

Hey everyone!!!
I'm JDStar on Etsy too.

I signed up for a shop about a year ago but could not figure out how to use it because there was no section for Weaving, has that changed now? Thanks - Sagadis...
Hi Sagadis.....
There is still no section for weaving......we've tried and tried to get them to make one.....but alas, they just don't seem interested.
So most of us list under the type of project (i.e. clothing) and use 'handwoven' in the tag area.
Hopes this helps!
Julie
I've had an Etsy shop since May 2008. Find me at www.frederickavenue.etsy.com

I have a store with fibre and yarn, I must admit that it is mainly an excuse to dye more stuff than I could ever possibly spin, knit or weave. One day I might have handwoven bags to sell but at the moment I'm not happy enough with what I make to sell it.
Rather than go the Etsy route, I started a store on Art Fire. No listing fees, no commissions, just a flat rate per month.
As for shipping, you just put down an amount. I used $5 for small items, with an additional $2 if people buy a second item.
If you decide to open a shop, they ask for referrals and if you say I refer you, I get points. :)
Cheers,
Laura
I have an etsy store as well.

I have a couple of Etsy stores -- one for sellig stash "Rawbits" and one for completed items "Moodyandraven". However, my main thrust is 1000 Markets and my store there is http://www.1000markets.com/shops/bannermountaintextiles No listing fees -- no montly fee and you pay 5.5% + .50 when you sell something. It is a juried site. I would love to see more handweavers open their shops there - more textiles would be a delight (especially quality handwoven ones).
Beryl
I would love to open a store on 1000 markets but as I am in France I don't qualify!
Tisserande - I've seen your work on Etsy and believe me, 1000 Markets would be lucky to have you. I think they may open it to other countries in the future.
Gill,
Your scarves and shawls are stunning!! I had to go peak at your etsy store. I hope you have shared them on Weavolution too. Although I , too, am a weaver, it would be an honor to own one. Your photos do a good job of showing the colors and pattern.
Well done,
Claudia, co-founder Weavolution
My etsy store is cavyshops.etsy.com I have hand dyed fiber and yarn.
You have been busy dyeing and spinning. Nice colors, I love the naturally dyed green. I am spinning some green wool/tencel right now. It must be my green year.
Good luck, hope it all sells quickly.
Claudia

i have needlefelted brooches and pendants , each store listing exclusive items.

Absolutely love your caterpillar scarves. I'm just learning how to weave and it's on my list of experiments! :-) Lydia in Texas
Thanks! I actually only have commercially spun yarn listed right now (I do have a few skeins of handspun in the "sale" bin, that I haven't listed yet, probably should get around to that....)
I kept some of that green for myself, I'm not sure what I'll use it in, but I really like the color too. I've also got some superwash merino yarn that is half yellow, and half the same green that I haven't listed yet either.
Thank you Beryl for your encouraging comments - I'll keep an eye on it to see if they change their membership policies!
Claudia
Many thanks for your kind comments. Yes, I do intend to put a couple of projects up - as soon as I can drag myself away from the loom!

Wow, I'm feeling kind of intimidated as a novice crafter. Those are such lovely items.
CampbellCreekWeavery is my etsy store name. I prefer selling to shops and galleries, but mostly I prefer selling my handwovens. Then I can weave more!
(Think I goofed up when I posted before - and I don't see a delete option to remove the incriminating evidence)

Happy New Year!
My new years resolution is to start an Etsy store. I don't know why it has overwhelmed me in the past. I've created websites, blogs and consider myself computer literate, but Etsy just seems to be something I haven't wanted to tackle. BUT this too will change! In 2012 I WILL have an Etsy store!
So... Is there any chance anyone wants to start an Etsy group here on Weavolution? Judging from this thread... There are lots of you who have a store. I'd love to have a place to chat about Etsy and share joys, triumphs, challenges, etc with fellow weavers and fiber artists!
Thanks!
Suzy
Good Morning and HAppy New Year,
My etsy store is sitkumarts and I sell my handmade reborn dolls. They are very different from weaving but I am not good enough at weaving to sell it yet. I put some rugs on etsy and some lady got real mad and told me off and then put rugs just like I had made on for less money. So I don't list rugs right now.
But my dolls sell ok on there and it is an easy place to list them too.
Marlene, who get to get back at the loom as soon as the football is over .
There is an etsy group at http://weavolution.com/group/weavo-etsy-weaving-team started a year ago, it looks like it never went anywhere.
Here is mine too. I mostly sell used fiber equipment - some fiber and scarves.
http://www.etsy.com/shop/maverickson
Add circles and favorite items and shops to your site and the traffic flow increases.
I have a shop on Etsy, too. We sell weaving kits and woven and knitted scarves. Check it out here: http://www.etsy.com/shop/lotsaknots
Claudia
I also have an etsy store and a website - visit sometime. :)
I sell scarves, shawls and wraps.
http://www.etsy.com/shop/sdoakdesigns
It's interesting looking at all the different stores.
My website too.
Sandra
