I was trying to change some global notifications from my profile and came across this:
Check this box to receive an e-mail notification for follow-ups on your nodes (pages, forum topics, etc). You can not disable notifications for individual threads.
Check this box to receive e-mail notification for follow-up comments to comments you posted. You can later disable this on a post-by-post basis... so if you leave this to YES, you can still disable follow-up notifications for comments you don't want follow-up mails anymore - i.e. for very popular posts.
There's no box to check under the second option.
I'm also not sure what 'administer notifications' is supposed to mean--- manage maybe? seems like a good guess.

It is really the drop-down box you have to select. The selections are:
- No comments
- All comments
- Replies to my comments
Which ever drop down you select becomes active after you hit the save button at the bottom.
Please try it and let me know how it works.
