I was getting a lot of potential spammers requesting to join my Yahoo groups.  You could sort of tell by a) the really bad English in the "reasons" to join and. b) the "generality" of the request.  Anyway. some of them were pretty hilarious!

Wish I could persuade my Structo Yahoo group to "migrate" over here, but we seem to be firmly-entrenched on Yahoo!

cheers, Nancy C.

Hi Nancy, Thanks for your

Hi Nancy,

Thanks for your support and efforts with your Yahoo group. It's very interesting how many Yahoo group moderators have reported the same experience. When they propose moving over here everyone goes a little nuts and objects. Give them some time to think about it. Give them some good reasons, like the 4000+ users on Weavolution and they may change their minds.

We hope to be able to offer the option of private groups in the future. Then, you can control who joins your group. That might appeal to some of the Yahoo folks.

Yahoogroups is a great

Yahoogroups is a great system. Yahoo serves dial up people very well. Forums that are heavy in graphics like Weavolution and Ravelry are harder for people with slow connections. We are not comparing apples to apples here.

There is also the vast menu available on yahoogroups. Once you get into yahoogroups, there are thousands of different topics you can access from a single log in.

I'm on hundreds of yahoogroups, monitoring a dozen different topics. I'm a moderator on dozens of groups. I can access new messages quickly and easily.

Which is why the old message structure of Weavo was driving me crazy. It was taking me just as long to find new messages on Weavo as it did to find new messages from 100 different yahoo groups each day.

The new chronological message system is very helpful. Although people with slow connections will still find it hard to use Weavo because of the graphics.

But it is the people on Weavolution that made me stay long enough to see the change. Without all the great content and help from people on this group, I would shuffled away into the ether long ago. I expect a lot of people have wandered away and need to be told about the improvements.

I'll try to mention that on my groups.

Have a good day!

Hi Nancy, I like your Structo

Hi Nancy,

I like your Structo group on yahoo and I have recommended people to it. I would love to play with one of those looms if I ever find one.

On my yahoo groups I setup to let anybody join, but all new members are moderated. Every spammer I've seen spams on their first message. They get caught and banned through moderation. I approve legit messages and change member to unmoderated.

It works well for the dozens of groups I moderate.

Have a good day!

On the Yahoo groups I run or moderate, members are unmoderated, but members need to be approved before joining.  It's generally not hard to tell whether or not someone is interested in a topic like medieval shoemaking! The other precaution I take is that attachments to the list are NOT allowed.

Funny, how many groups I added to my list when I began to weave!

I think we STructo junkies

I think we STructo junkies have an "endangered species" feeling! (-;  We seem to think the rest of the weaving world is just too dense to "get" how wonderful the rusty little metal (and the 2-ton wooden versions) looms are. LOL  A lot of people, including the FIT instructors who have been using and trying to hold them together for several generations of beginning-weaving classes, sometimes run screaming at the sight of one!!!  Seriously, we have carved out our little corner but I will keep bringing it up.  There is this sense that the Yahoo group is uniquely OUR THING there!  I was hoping to be able to organize a STructo exhibit for Convergence this year but have gotten 'way too busy to organize it all, so maybe 2012.   Personally, (well, duh) I love the looms - heavy wooden monsters and little rust-collectors alike!  I own about 30 that I use for the kids and for myself.  I own a very peculiar, obviously-custom-made one with 16 shafts!!! Yeah, it's one of the little metal ones!     Depending on your point of view on Structos, this will make you either melt with envy or have nightmares for a month!!!

Seriously, though, I will keep working on the group to "migrate."  I'd hate to have two running parallel, since it might confuse the issues...we have a LOT of "how-to" drafts and tips in the "files" section and I designed us some t-shirts on cafepress.
