and its driving me nuts having to search 3 pages to find the new posts! Then theres the phantom one that doesn't seem to exist - no red icon, and tried a date search that couldn't find it, aaarghhhhhhh! But the "1 new" link is there, not that that works often either!
I'm still thinking its to do with how busy the forum is, but the long threads are getting harder to search by the hour. Sometimes, when you are in the group forum, and go to re-read an old topic, there are new messages with their pretty red icons inside the thread, but no indication in the forum itself.
All this seems to work brilliantly in the slower group forums, and even in the general chatty areas.
Perhaps there are too many of us posting at once? Too busy for the code, hehe!

Next time you encounter this, there are some things that you can do that would really help us find the problem...
First - If you know legitimately that there SHOULD have been a pink envelope somewhere in the topic, look at the date/time stamps, and see if you can determine which one might be the misbehaving reply. At this point, I can't say if this is actually the source of the problem or not, but lets start with this to the best of our ability.
Second - Record whose post it is, what is the time and date stamp on the message, what topic it's appearing in, and enough information that if we look at it, we would be able to identify the specific message out of any others this poster may have made in the topic.
Third - Record what time YOU initially opened the topic (to the best of your ability anyway) The easiest way for you to do this might be for you to just post a message here... then we will know approximately when you ran into the problem relevant to system time.
And then - pass that information on to us....
I know this sounds cumbersome, but irritating bugs almost always have that quality of needing good reasonable data to track them down...

hI Kay, will a screen shot do?

That froze on me!! when I looked at the hot topics it told me there were 3 posts, this is 2 of them - no red icons anywhere on these two, but the first one showed up.
Laverne has just made another post to that thread, at 8.01 am, and no red icon but it was showing up on the hot topics - again I had to scroll right the way through all 3 pages to find out what it was.
It was not showing up when I took that screen shot, so I must have taken it about the same time Laverne posted.
8.16 am and Laverne edits it so it now has a red icon, but clicking on the link on the hot topics takes me to the start of the thread, not the actual posting.
Another one. Message time 8.41 am
The thread is being updated by Bolivian Warmi at the moment, is this perhaps some of the problem? Doesn't explain why it happens in the middle of your night/my day time.
Post from 9.06am has not shown up on the hot topics page - there is another post at the end of the thread too - its still all the same thread. The hot topics list is showing posts made before and after the ones that don't show. Could it be that most of the "missing" posts are all made by the one person? Just a thought.
Have fun with the fly spray!
Good night!
This is good data, Caroline, and I do have to go off to my Real Life (RL) job at the moment, but I'll take a look at it tonight...
Kay
Ummmm............I think I broke the page.....:-(
This red envelope problem seems to be limited to just that one page-this one............
I was having a tremedous struggle with the internet and trying to upload a bunch of stuff to that page yesterday so there was a lot of upload attempts, deleting, editing, trying again. Maybe I broke it!
Laverne
Good morning, I've just logged in and this thread is also without new message icons for the last 2 posts:
also, on the original thread (5347) only 3 new message icons have shown up out of what the hot topics have told me is 11 messages ( I have found 10 so far).
Hope this helps.
Laverne -
I'm sure you didn't "break it" as you say... BUT, the fact that you needed to revise the thread in some way may be a clue... I haven't had a chance to look at yours and Caroline's data points yet...
Kay
OK, I have some details on a specific instance of the problem.
It is this forum topic: www.weavolution.com/node/1335
When I looked at the main Weaving forum, it showed a pink envelope, and that the last post for this topic had been made over a day ago (by Tina). This topic is specifically a "public" topic.
When I opened the "topic", the last post on the 1st page was LauraFry's post, dated 09/22/2009 at 12:51 - which I had previously read.
The post that SHOULD have had a pink envelope icon next to it was the last post, immediately following Laura's post. - It is the first post on the top of the second page, though. (TinaHilton's post, dated 09/27/2009 at 23:02)
THEORY: Does the fact that I have opened the TOPIC clear the "pink" envelope state in such a way that when I go to page 2, the pink envelope is not shown?
It wouldn't affect the page 1 status, but I could envision a scenario where going to page 2 could be perceived as reopening the topic to view the 2nd page, but the pink envelope status may be entirely associated with the display of page 1.
OK, I know this sounds VERY detailed and VERY technical. I apologize for the details... But hopefully, for anyone who cares, it might give you an idea that sometimes the problems have very specific conditions that can cause them to appear. (And, it's the software engineer in me! *grin*)
Continuing to "gather data"
Kay
If I understand right what you are saying........I agree. Sometimes you open a topic and assume the latest response is on page two or the last page. You go to that page and find nothing new. Then you realize that the new post was a response to an old posting and return to page one. The envelope has now disappeared from page one because you are reopening it. I have noticed this and once you are aware of it you just know how to deal with it.
I don't know if I am imagining this but I have noticed an improvemnet in that edits to posts now appear in ''hot threads''. Before they got their red envelopes but didn't appear as a NEW post in hot threads. This is good if the edit is actually new info and not just a fixed typo-yay!
Laverne
Kay, just another thought on this. The problem threads are any that go over to a second page!
I am noticing very similar problems with the two Rigid Heddlers WAL threads. Everything was fine until they got longer than one page - now I am taken to the first post, not the new posts, and there are no little pink envelopes to identify them.
Does this help?
I noticed the same thing and will contact our developers today.
Thanks all for the feedback.
Claudia
