Searching Favorites and Sorting

Several parts to this request.  I would like to be able to sort my favorite weavers, projects, and drafts but don't see any way to do that. Weaver, date, title, and keyword/tag would be useful sorts. I'd also like to be able to search within these groups and add my own private tags (e.g. "met at NEWS" or "Oelsner").

Second, I would love to see who has favorited a given project or draft.  It would lead me to others with similar tastes, and looking through their favorites might help me find new ones.  If you use LibraryThing, think about the "other similar libraries" feature.

Last, when sorting on projects etc. by any of the available sorts it appears that they randomize if the value sorted on is the same.  That's fine, unless you are trying to look through a bunch of pages on the same sort.  Then the same project or weaver will come up several times as you go from page to page (must be re-randomizing each time the page changes), and you know projects or weavers or drafts are being missed in the process.

Good suggestions

You are correct that there is no way to sort favorites.  I can see how that can be an issue if you have many favorites!  And, privately tagging or commenting your favorites is a neat idea.  Your example of how that would be useful is very good.

Being able to see who else has favorited a project or draft seems like a great idea at first glance, and seems like it should not be too complicated.  After all, you can already browse through other peoples' favorites by going to their profiles... you just can't browse in the opposite direction.  And you've indicated a compelling benefit.  My only concern is that by showing who has favorited a project or draft on each project/draft page, that could be perceived as creating a popularity contest.  So, I think we'll have to consider both the merits and the potential drawbacks of the idea carefully.  What do you think?  What do others think?

Regarding the sorting issue, if you could give a specific, repeatable example then that would be very helpful.  Ideally, sorting by a common value should not result in random behavior, and traversing the pages shouldn't result in repeats (unless someone is adding new content while you browse... in which case the last item on one page could suddenly become the first item on the next).  Random behavior would be a definite flaw, and I'd like to reproduce the issue.

I'll add a note for each of the issues to our wish list, though more input on the 2nd and 3rd items would be greatly appreciated.

Not exactly 'sorting', but it

Not exactly 'sorting', but it would be nice if, when clicking on the red new messages, you wound up *at* the new messages rather than at the beginning of the queue.  A small thing, but when there is a popular topic the list of messages can be rather long to scroll through.

Like I say, a small thing.  :)

cheers,

Laura

Viewing other's favorites...

Facebook is the universal community for connections. Why not use it for its intended purpose instead of attempting to duplicate those functions on Weavolution? Just allow members to link their Weavolution profiles to their Facebook profiles. Participate or not as you choose. Block or allow people as you choose.

I had the same problem Laura

When I was using Internet Explorer, I also was frustrated that clicking on the red new messages that I was taken to the top of the list.  I have recently changed to viewing Weavolution in Chrome (Google's Browser), and clicking on the red new now takes me to the new messages.  It's so much nicer in Chrome for that reason.

favorites

Adding the extra step of having to go through Facebook, which many people do not use, would be cumbersome.  I don't post the same things here as on Facebook, and my controls there are tighter than they need to be here.

Re favorites being a popularity contest, you can already look at it that way since people can be sorted by "most favorited" and to a lesser degree with projects, which can be sorted by most comments (used to be able to sort projects on most favorited).  I don't find sorting by number of comments useful in any way.  I'm not sure sorting by number of stars would be useful either since there are clearly a lot of different scales being applied.  I'd like to be able to sort by level but one person's "advanced" is another's "beginner."  From that standpoint, if I see someone who has favorited a project I like, I would be more apt to go look at their profile and favorites and maybe make a connection, rather than looking randomly at profiles and favorites.

Sorting issue - if I sort by one of the subcategories which could have multiple pieces or users at the same value (# of comments, # of favorites, whatever), that is where I have seen the randomization effect. So, if there are 300 pieces which have 4 comments, they will not always come up in the same order. Randomizing is a good idea, but it should stay constant for the session, not re-randomize as you page through.

I'm still willing to help add tags to projects if you decide to do that.  One reason I favorite so many is that it is difficult to go back and find some of them based on logical search words or tags provided in the descriptions.  Lots of ufos and mis-id'ed stuff.

The red for new tags seem to be working more reliably for me lately, a definite plus.  Thanks!
