Remembered login

It's a tiny thing, but it is the main thing which keeps me from contributing to Weavolution as much as I would like. There is an option on login to "remember me" and I always tick this when I am using my own laptop. However, the memory doesn't appear to be very long!

I remain logged in to almost everything I use frequently (Yahoo, Google etc) and they kick me every couple of weeks or so to put in my password again. But I was last on Weavolution four days ago and it has already forgotten who I am. It is hardly a big deal to log in again, I know, but when I can go straight into other groups without this step then I tend to choose those other groups - I need to save my logging in patience for the really sensitive areas such as bank accounts. Can you tell me what length of time the login is supposed to be remembered for? Is it as brief as four days or is there something wrong at my end of things? If it is intentionally short, then I wonder why?

I would love to visit Weavolution more frequently, but realistically it is going to be once or twice a week. My response to the not-being-logged-in thing is that I tend to read as a guest but not to post.

Thanks

Cally

Hi Cathy, The remember me is

Hi Cathy,

The remember me is supposed to last two weeks. It does seem to be that for me, and I thought we had this ironed out.

I'll forward your comment to our great volunteer technical team and see if they have any ideas. If not, they'll put it on their list.

Can you please include other information such as what browser and version you are using? I know that IE hasn't kept pace with the other browsers and is not as Drupal friendly as the rest.

Thanks for writing.

Browser

Hi Alison

I use Firefox - current version is 3.6.17. I have Firefox 4 on a desktop PC which I sometimes use. Is it perhaps because the remember is cancelled if I log in to weavolution on a different machine in the interim?

Thanks

Cally

I don't think that should

I don't think that should cause it. I do that too lots. So this is a puzzler.

Thanks for the information. Every little bit helps our tech team solve the issues.

I have the same experience

I have the same experience with weavolution. I usually find that I have been "forgotten" during the weekend, no matter what browser I use. At home on my own mac I use Firefox, and when I came home from a weekend trip last night I had to log in again. This  morning at work I had to log in again with IE. I had been logged in both places last friday, and both places I had marked for remember me.

glad it's not just me!

Thanks for chipping in Eva. I am glad it's not just me! Not that I want there to be a problem with weavolution, just that I'm relieved I haven't completely lost the plot!

Just to be contrary: I'm

Just to be contrary: I'm always remembered. More than 2 weeks, I think (but I'm not sure). I *think* that if I have logged on from another computer, I have been logged out from this one - but I'm not sure about that, either. OTOH, I asked my Firefox to remember the password, so I have only one more "enter" to get in :-)

A recent problem

I have stayed logged in on Weavolution for ages without having to do anything, but recently I have had to log in again at regular intervals, I can't remember how long. But like Kerstin I have my computer remember password so just tick the remember me box and click login. It's not a big deal, just a minor nuisance.

sometimes remembered, sometimes not...

so I just log on again... and reread "new" items that I've read before.

As I get older, maybe that's a good thing.  Don't remember.

lazy besom

I guess I'm just a lazy besom then! However, I never ever set my computer to remember passwords. Not so much for security reasons as for memory ones - if I never typed my passwords then I would never be able to remember what they were and would never be able to log on using another machine. I'd like to think my brain is full of more interesting information, but I suspect it is just lazy too!

I use LastPass

I use LastPass (http://www.lastpass.com ) to remember noncritical passwords - it's secure and synchronizes across multiple computers (or is accessible via their website if you are on a strange computer).  It's more secure than Firefox and more secure than using the same password for twenty or thirty sites (which is what I used to do).

Weavolution "remembers" me for a very long time, but maybe that's because I visit so often!

I have a laptop and desktop

I have a laptop and desktop computer.  Any time that I go from desktop to laptop to desktop, I have to log in again, even if it's the same day. Basically, it doesn't want you logged in from 2 different computers at the same time. I use Firefox on both.  I have remember me and the pw remembered on both computers so it's not much of a hassle to log back in.

Two thoughts on this issue

I have consulted our technical team and they asked two good questions.  Here are two things to consider and let me know what the answer is:

So one question to ask could be - have you started clearing your cookies for some reason, or using a tool for security purposes that might do this?  Because that will require you to log in again on your next visit.

Other points:  Whether you use a 2nd computer, or even a second browser on the same computer some of the time... .each computer or browser keeps a separate login cookie.   It could be easy to log in one computer (or browser), and then a few days later, the cookie on the 2nd computer (or browser) expires when you go to use it, and think to yourself, "I just had to log in again the other day..."

We are tracking this issue and appreciate your feedback.

Thanks,

Claudia

thoughts

I am a very rare cookie-clearer, so I don't think that is it. I use IE for day-job stuff and sometimes need to clear that out, but always use Firefox for "my" stuff so it is left filling up with my logins and stuff.

I am also mainly on the laptop, and only occasionally trying to access from another machine.

At the moment I am following this thread so coming to weavolution as often as possible, and it is remembering me for the few hours between visits! Not sure I can keep up the pace though as other duties are piling up in an alarming manner.

do I get the prize...

...for the most occurrences of "stuff" in one sentence?

Cally, I hate to disappoint

Cally,

I hate to disappoint you, there are others who engage in more lengthy explanations.  I find yours to be informative and just the right length.  Beyond 2 paragraphs you lose me to other tasks.

Thanks for keeping in touch on this.  We have a couple of lingering issues from our move to our current host.  All in all, it has been a huge improvement with a couple of bothersome issues like this one.

Curious issue

This is a very curious issue.  It's affecting some people but not others, and with different browsers.  And Claudia told me today that she saw the problem this morning, when using Safari.

I haven't observed the problem myself, but I have configured my browser to remember my password so I never have to re-enter it when I am logged out.  Sometimes I log out and sometimes I don't.  So... I can't say I've been paying attention!

The only point I can think of to add, as we collect more reports, is this:  When you have "Remember me' checked, and click "Log In", for up to 2 weeks, you should be able to visit Weavolution again and again from the same computer & browser, and you shouldn't need to log in again.  But, visiting the site does not extend the expiration date.  I mention this because Eva said, "I had been logged in both places last Friday", which is subtly different from "I logged into both places last Friday."

I am going to intentionally stay logged in from today forward, and see if the login expires earlier than I expect or not.

forgotten again

Having been checking more frequently than usual, I stayed away over the weekend - and sure enough my login is no longer remembered. Still in Firefox, which hasn't had any updates or anything in that time.

This is not a recent problem for me - it has been the case ever since I joined weavolution - so I am not sure how much the hosting change has to do with it. It might just be because I look at it in a funny way...

Developers are on it

Hi Cally,

I posted a ticket with our developers requesting they look into this.  I will keep you posted on this comment thread.  Again, thanks for your patience.  I hope we can get this resolved soon.

I have never had a problem.

I have never had a problem.  I hadn't logged in for over a week (guests) and Weavolution remembered.  I use Firefox and have it remember non-critical passwords also.  In Firefox,  Options - Security it asks if you want to remember passwords and a list of saved passwords.  I guess if it is remembering other passwords, this isn't the problem, but it might be worth checking.
