The red "new" are still behaving strangely.
Today I logged in (really logged in, password and all) about 2 hors ago.On the home page, I was told that the News&announcements forum had 7 new replies to the "April news" thread (great joke!). On the Forums page, N&A said it had 1 new thread (correct) and 22 new replies (not correct). On the N&A page, there was 1 new thread (correct) and 7 new replies (correct). I went back and forth to the pages, refreshing them and so on, but Forums page insisted on me having 22 unread. After reading the thread, all red figures reset.
I also read the Improving... post about improved search. It then had one post, Claudia's. Now (a little later, still same session), I found a new post/comment on that thread (Laurie's). All pages are in accordance that Laurie's comment was posted 12 hrs ago. It was not there for me 2 hrs ago.
Then I posted a new comment in the Scandinavian forum. It is only there once, but on the home page, in the left column it appears twice.

Thanks Kerstin, I will pass this on to our developers and hosting company. Both are working to fix a few bugs that are left over from our migration to new hosting. The red "new" has been an issue for a while and I will be chatting with the developers about lingering issues (such as the red new being out of sync) at the beginning of next week.
I know the hosting co. and developers are working on changing the caching and that may account for the appearing/disappearing comments. As for the count on new comments, that's a bug we have been trying to track for a while.
I aprreciate your help and time to post problems when you find them.
Claudia
Perhaps unrelated, but I posted to The Efficient Weaver yesterday and yet that does not show on the Groups and Forums list of recent activity while posts much older than that do appear....
cheers,
Laura
Thanks Laura. I think it may be related and is odd regardless. I'll forward it as another datapoint.
Also - enjoyed your thread repairing youtube. Very easy to follow.
Alison
Thanks Alison - it was an 'adventure' getting the clip done so glad you enjoyed it. :)
cheers,
Laura
okay - now it's showing up....... :)
cheers,
Laura
The new comments only showed for the groups a member belongs to?
If I am not interested in rigid heddle weaving, for instance, then the activity in that group is of no concern, and my not seeing what I have not read is no issue. I keep thinking of it in yes/no on/off terms (is that binary?) The system would only have to display the number of new posts for the groups I belong to. The tracking of new posts begins the moment I join a group. and ceases the moment I leave, and begins anew should I rejoin. Some might choose to join every single group, some none, just search for specific info, and most probably would choose to belong to a handful or so. So from the moment I join a group, the system only has to monitor those post I have not read from the moment of my joining forward. Anything I have not read for any groups I choose not to join is irrelevant. I doubt that very many people read every post, but maybe they do. I would see it as a plus to be able to limit the tracking of unread posts to the groups I choose to join.
Passapman, the function you describe already exists.
Look up in the orange box at the top of the screen.
See the phrase "My groups".
When you click on that it takes you to a screen that shows ONLY the groups you selected.
The phrase "Forums" takes you to the general forums: chat, weave, sales which do not require you to join.
I also use the "Dashboard" phrase alot, that shows me all the activity I believe except for private groups and admin activity.
Hope this helps, someone else can probably clarify other items....
Regards Deb Mc
Well done, Deb. You said it well.
Claudia
Brilliant! I just didn't know. Thank
Passapman
Kerstin,
I investigated your original comment further in order to explain it to the developers. The red "new" on the home page relates solely to a new comment on that post. It is different from the yellow/orange new you see on the Forums landing page.
On the Forums landing page you will see a yellow star and #new in a forum where You have unread posts and replies. Here is an example:

When I open the Chat forum I now see that there is one new topic that has been started and 3 replies (the new topic is counted as 1 reply and there are 2 replies in another comment). The Ohio weavers comment is new and there are 2 new comments in the textile expressions post.
There is also a red updated in the post that has comments you have not yet read and a red new in the new post that was flagged on the landing page for this forum. If you choose not to read anything new in the forums, you can click on the "Mark all as read" on the landing page and on each individual forum. It appears on the top right side of the page.
See if that helps when you look at your current Forums landing page. Access that page by clicking on Forums in the orange box at the top of the page when you are signed in to Weavolution.
I believe this is the start of a new Help topic.
Claudia
that was not what happened. A modification (in italics) of what I wrote:
On the home (start) page, I was told that the News&announcements forum
had 7 new replies (OK, so there might have been one new topic and 6 replies) to the "April news" thread (great joke!). On the
Forums page (reached via the orange box), N&A said it had 1 new thread (correct) and 22 new
replies (not correct) On the N&A page, there was 1 new thread
(correct) and 7 new replies (correct). I went back and forth to the
pages, refreshing them and so on, but Forums page insisted on me having
22 unread. After reading the thread, all red figures reset. (That is, I had no hidden "unreads" - or at least, that is what the system thinks. It was only on the forums page I had 22 unread - which is why I think it is a bug. Not very important, but still a bug)
from forums page:

should mean there are 7 new-to-me messages, yes?

These are all un-read I find when I come to chat page - 3 + 1 = 4 (not 7)
When I had visited both threads, forums page indicated no new msgs.
The way I am interpreting it, the 7 new you are seeing on the landing page includes anything with a star on the bubble in the left column. If there is a new post with 0 replies I believe it is counting it as one new.
Do you think that may be possible?
As for the discrepancies from the Home page, did that happen on the day we were migrating the site to the new host? I suspect everything was a bit screwy when we were in that adjustment between hosts period on Wednesday, March 30.
Just trying to help make sense of the Drupal counting system. Thanks for helping me figure this out.
Claudia
The incorrect number of messages (nearly) always appear on Chat. The Forums page often (but not quite always) has a higher number of unread than I can find on the Chat page itself. Right now Forums indicated 6 unread on Chat; the Chat page had only 3.
It is not a big thing, but indicates a bug.
Hi Kerstin,
Yes, there is a known Drupal bug which John found this weekend. When we upgrade to the newest version of Drupal, the problem will be resolved. There is not a fix for our current version of Drupal, they incorporated the fix into the next release of Drupal.
Thank you for your patience with this matter. We were excited to learn that it is indeed a bug and it is not a Weavo issue.
Claudia
I mentioned this in another thread...
I have identified a workaround that might help in limited cases. I hate prescribing workarounds - the real issue is that we need to fix our site, not tell our community how to use it - but it's the only option I have available right now.
If you have a "X new" indicator appearing for a forum area where you've already read everything, you can click on the link "Mark all topics read" within that forum area. I know this workaround is only useful if you're all caught up with reading everything of interest to you.
