It has been brought to my attention that some people are having difficulty uploading photos from their computers to many areas of Weavolution and, in particular, the Projects pages.  Please share your experiences with us on this comment so we may take your concerns to our developers and get this problem worked out.

One user contacted me recently because she was having problems getting photos to load.  Our developers were able to fix the problem in 5 minutes and turn a negative experience into a much improved one and the user now shares her projects more easily.

If this is preventing you from using Weavolution, please allow us to make it right if we can. We would like to hear the details of your experience and allowed the chance to make it right.

Thank you,

Claudia Segal, Weavolution co-founder and webmistress

Several issues involving

Several issues involving image uploading have been brought to our attention.  We are soliciting feedback on these issues to further refine our understanding.

Any workarounds that I or others recommend are intended to be temporary.  We recognize that workarounds are not a solution, and we aim to take ownership of each problem, and not push it back onto our community members.

* At least one person is experiencing uploads that hang indefinitely.  If anyone else has experienced this problem recently, we need to know.  Symptoms of an upload hanging include a progress bar that never reaches 100% (for projects) or a progress spinner that never stops spinning (for images you want to include in forums or groups).  We have been unable to determine why this would happen to just one member and no-one else.  We need more information to investigate!

* Some might not be aware of the ability to upload images in forum and group discussions, or may have difficulty navigating the steps to do so.  (Tip: When posting a message, there's a small picture icon in the comment toolbar [to the left of the quote mark].  Clicking this icon is meant to pop open a small window where you can paste in a URL to another site, or click a button at the far right to upload an image.  It is easier to paste in a URL to another site; the process to upload an image for use in forums and groups needs improvement.)  We're aware that the process for uploading images to projects and groups/forums are different, and that consistency and simplicity are important.

* As mentioned in Iphone & photos, there may be problems interacting with our site from mobile devices, and this affects uploads too.  I will post an update in that discussion regarding those issues, and ask that we keep this thread to issues for uploading from Macs and PCs.

I am unable to put photos

I am unable to put photos into comments on the forums. I have read all the information on how to do this, and used to be able to, but now when I post a reply I do not get the toolbar necessary to use to insert pictures. There is nothing but a box to put the subject line and a box for comment. Even in this reply....

How can I put uploaded pics into comments in the forums, please?

Hi Su,

Is it possible you are using IE for your browser and you were using Firefox or some other browser before?  IE does not offer the full range of options when viewing Weavo and any other Drupal website.

I have always used Internet

I have always used Internet Explorer, both when I could upload photos and now, when I cannot. Are you saying that if I do not use a different browser, I cannot use photos??
Why did it work before please?

I finally figured it out - I think

I was having trouble uploading photos at first because the website will only allow a certain size.  All of mine were too large.  So finally, I went in to edit my photos.  Under properties, I was able to re-size my photos to a smaller size.  Now, I am able to post photos that have been re-sized.

Missing toolbar

For Su:

This is a bit of a guess, but the toolbar could magically vanish as you've described if your browser has cached (saved a local copy) of the text editor, and this cache wasn't saved quite right.  One example of how this could happen, would be if you loaded a page with the editor, and something interrupted the page load at just the wrong moment.  Not your fault.  Technology is sometimes fickle.

In Internet Explorer 8 and 9, you can try selecting "Safety->Delete Browsing History..." which gives you a menu to clean cached information.  If you have "Favorited" or "Bookmarked" Weavolution, you'll need to uncheck the top option.  You should not need to clear anything but Temporary Internet files, so uncheck anything else (other than that one option) too.  Pressing the delete button will then remove old copies of webpages that you've visited, and the next time you visit sites, everything from those sites (like our editor) will download fresh and new.

It is also possible that the toolbar could magically re-appear on your next visit and that you may not have to do anything to fix it.  (Information in caches is supposed to automatically expire after some time passes.)  If the problem goes away all by itself, then it's almost certainly a cache problem, and you'll know what to try to fix it faster if it ever happens again.

HI John...thanks for the

HI John...thanks for the heads up...I have gone through the process of deleting the browser history and still no toolbar. Yesterday I upgraded to IE9, still no toolbar. I unchecked Weavolution in my favorites folder as well....
Thanks for trying- it is incredibly frustrating to want to help someone and be unable to add a visual to explain.

Su :-)

Maybe scripting

After thinking some more this morning, I had another idea.

Is it possible that scripting is turned off in your browser, maybe for security reasons?  The toolbar requires JavaScript, aka "Active scripting" in Internet Explorer.  The easy way to check this is to use this test site:

http://www.javatester.org/javascript.html

There should be a pink box with text that will tell you if scripting is working, or not working.  Could you check this please and let me know what it says?

If disabled scripting is not the cause, then I will remove a bit more of my hair, and ponder further. :)

iPhones just don't like the toolbar

Deb, yes, the toolbar doesn't appear in iPhones, iPods, and iPads for some other reason which we haven't solved.  There is another discussion thread for issues using Weavolution from mobile devices.

My comment above to test scripting is just for Su, who is missing the toolbar in Internet Explorer on her computer, and where the toolbar used to appear but vanished on her last week.

OK - put my computer whiz son

OK - put my computer whiz son on this....
First - I checked the java script thing and it indicated Java Script was working on my browser.....so this is what I did....

When I want to put an image on the screen, I have a code I can type in and the image shows in the post. I am going to test it here by showing a photo of a 4 color double weave sample I did in rayon cheinlle:
If the pic shows, I guess this is how I will have to add pics from now on!

Hi Su, The picture shows for

Hi Su,

The picture shows for me!  Are you OK with doing it this way for now?

I personally prefer not to leave a mystery problem unsolved.  It is up to you whether it is worth the effort to investigate further on your end.

Wednesday, I'll ask another of our technical team members to see if she has any ideas, since I've run dry for now.  I can't think of anything else on your end that could cause a problem so I'm suspicious that maybe there's an account problem.

Hey JJohnsII.....I can

Hey JJohnsII.....I can certainly use the method my son came up with, no worries.....I talked to my other programmer son and he tells me that Drupal does not support IE well at all...that is the problem, so I don't know if it is solve-able or not. But at least I can now add pics, so I am content enough. I wonder if others using IE are having the same issues. Anyway, thanks for putting your mind to this issue...if there is anything else you think of that you would like me to try, I am willing to help find a solution. I don't like to leave problems unsolved either.....

Thanks.....Su :-)

Will try again tomorrow

Our technical team member that participates in the Wednesday meetings was unavailable to participate last week, so I will try again this week!

This is one of several things I want to ask her about. :)

As for the "Drupal doesn't work well with IE" point, let me clarify.

I recommend IE8 and later versions of Internet Explorer.  There may be compatibility issues between Weavolution and earlier versions of IE (especially IE6 and prior).  I'm not aware of anything in the core Drupal system that uses features unsupported by IE8 and later.

I believe our Weavolution community members using IE8 and later should expect an experience every bit as rich, fulfilling, and trouble-free as users on recent versions of Firefox, Safari, Chrome, or Opera.

Where there are a few minor differences between the IE Weavolution experience and that under other browsers, we hope to resolve even those discrepancies someday.

Not to rain on anyone's

Not to rain on anyone's parade, but I have tried with both IE8 and now IE9 and neither will allow me the option of inserting photos. For those who use IE and cannot insert photos, the fix I found was to do this:

type '<' (but no quote marks), followed by img
leave one space then type src and immediately type ="
Immediately after the " type in the url of the photo
Finish by closing the quote with ", then type in / and a final '>' (without quote marks)

When you type it out there is one space between img and src and no spaces between the quotation marks and the inserted URL. This is html code for inserting pictures and works for me. You must host your photos somewhere else on the internet. I host mine on my own website. I don't know if this will work if you upload photos to Weavolution or not.

And just to clarify my remark about Drupal....Drupal does NOT support all features used by IE.....that is why some of us are having problems. It is rather "slopppy" in the way it works with IE. I have had very competent programmers tell me this. I can find out more details, but doubt it would mean much to anyone but another programmer, so will refrain and leave that task to the programmers. My own experience is proof that IE8 and IE9 do not always work and provide that "rich, fullfilling and trouble-free" experience expected. But at least there is a work around. For those who are not having difficulties, good for you....glad it works. For those of us having trouble, the work to help find out what is happening is greatly appreciated.
