Looms Category?

After seeing the wide varieties of weaving techniques and styles on this site, I am beginning to thing there should be something that allows us to share pictures of our looms...

Just like in the Add Projects section where we can add a project and describe it, include pictures, etc...

We might want a My Studio section, where we can Add Looms, Add Tools, etc... Certainly there are some standard manufacturers out there, but there are also many, many looms that are handmade, or, there are purchased looms that have been customized to do what we particularly need...

I am really beginning to get excited about this site!

Yes, that was brought up a couple of months ago. Hoping that it'll become a reality soon. Loom hunting right now...

Interesting... exposes

Interesting... exposes another usability issue...

I can appreciate being able to click on your link to see what you're saying about the topic, but I have no clue what forum that would have been in, or how to find it without your link.  Doing a search didn't seem to show it...

When I clicked on your link, I did get to the relevant posts, but I didn't have any frame of reference for how to find it without that link.  In other words YOU knew where it was, but no one else would have been able to find it unless they were watching that forum (whatever it is, *grin*)

I have also been noticing that there are many other posts happening than those that show up when you select the forums tab.  For example, if you select "home", you get the latest "Hot Threads".  I think it would be important to show what forum those posts appear in.  Otherwise, if someone just when to the forums page and expected to find it, they wouldn't be able to do so.

more opinions....

hi Kay, If you click on the question rather than the number of posts, it brings up the category at the top, and the whole thread. I was confused too until I discovered this. ;-)

WoW!  I just realized

WoW!  I just realized something!  If you go to "Home", and click on any of the hot threads, some of them show "categories" and some of them don't!!!

What's the rhyme or reason with that?  At first I thought the ones without categories were projects... but now I think they are just posts added because people clicked on "Add Forum Post" and didn't actually add it to one of the existing categories??

wondering...

i think it has something to do with being a member of that forum or not. since we can all post on the Weavolution forums, I was able to quickly work out which forum this thread is on and post an answer to you. If it had come up in a forum I'm not a member of, I don't think I could have answered you without joining the forum.

You could be right...  I guess we should hope to hear from someone who knows more about what was intended about the feature...  Perhaps it's a question of whether the group is private or not.  If the group is private, I wouldn't expect to see anything about a thread in the hot topics, because I shouldn't be able to view it unless I'm a member of the group.  On the other hand, if it's public, then it should be available information as to what group it's posted in.

what does everyone else think?  (and perhaps a new forum post is warranted for this topic)...

First, about Looms We are

First, about Looms

We are working to get that function up and rolling.  We are almost finished with developing a standard list of looms and their manufacturers so when someone goes to enter their loom in their profile they will be able to choose from a list that is both consistent and accurate.  Once they have added their loom, there will be a way to add a photo of the loom and further details about it.

This will improve the searchability of the looms and be able to find people who are willing to let you try their loom in their home or studio.

Please let me know if this answers the question about looms and how it will function soon.

We are testing an improved version of the "Hot threads" where you will be able to see the group/forum where the thread originated.  You will also see the correct information in the "breadcrumbs" of that thread.

Please let me know if this answers you questions about the "Hot threads" at the top of the signed in home page.

New here, and wondering why

New here, and wondering why we all have to show whether or not we are willing to have people see our looms on our profile page.  I would rather not have have that particular line show up on my profile (it seems unfriendly), but I don't see any way to remove it.  It seems completely irrelevant unless someone is in the business of selling looms, which I am not.

Weavolution looks like a great site, overall.  Thanks!

In response to a request from

In response to a request from several users who felt it would be nice to know who lived in their area and had a loom they could try out.  Personally, it doesn't work for me so I put maybe.  Perhaps that would be the category you are most comfortable with.

Are you suggesting that people be allowed to not answer?  That might be a good idea.  Then, you neither seems friendly or unfriendly and it wouldn't show at all on your public profile page.

I'll look into that, thanks for the suggestion.

Here's a thought...

IF a user chooses to make their looms available, THEN the line can show up with that informational message.  Otherwise, don't show any message at all.  I think this would probably be a fairly straightforward easy-to-implement thing, but I know we need to focus on most important things first...

Thank you, Claudia.  Yes, I am suggesting that people be allowed to not answer the "see my looms" question.  On the profile page I have it won't allow me to not answer.  I've looked at a few profiles of other people, and some of them don't have that line - I don't know how they managed to eliminate it.

Thanks, kbird, it does seem logical that the line is only necessary if someone does choose to make their looms available.  Thank you for looking into this!

Hi Yarnplayer. I agree

Hi Yarnplayer.

I agree heartily. I did not like that line either. And I did not choose to allow people to drop by and see or test my loom, not because I am inhospitable, but because I live in Denmark and thought the trip might be too long for most people ;-)

I also agree that this is a wonderful site, though a bit confusing to find your way around in. But I love what I do manage to find. Wonderful people, these weavolutionaries!

OK... figured it out... the default behavior of the system is that no message is displayed if you don't tinker with the setting.  Once you change it, one of three possible messages will be displayed depending on your selection.  I have made a recommendation that the "No" choice be changed to a more user friendly "Not right now", and that if that selection is made, no message at all would be shown.

The "Not right now" setting should also be the default setting.

my 2cents for now...

Thank you, kbird, that sounds like a good recommendation.  I hope that option of no message showing will be made available.

I have submitted the request

I have submitted the request to our developers and it will probably take about a week to get it fixed.

In thhe meantime, we will have a new version of loom entry and a new yarn page very soon. I expect the developers to push several changes through on Monday.  Everything has been tested on the alpha site.  It's no guarantee something won't go wrong but we have done our best.
