Iphone & photos

just thought I'd record this item...

before we switched to the current system I was able to upload a photo from my iphone but I could not post text from my iphone.  That really wasn't a problem because I usually was on my larger computer in the evening and could add words to my photos.

now, I can post text but cannot post photos via my iphone (no photo icon appears), that is a problem because I just don't load my photos over to my computer everyday, more like monthly, so I never post photos much.

Chrome is out of the question for my iphone so is this just a "out of luck" problem?  Maybe bring it up next time you talk to your programmers

You should be able to post

You should be able to post photos from your iPhone because it's Safari, right?  I'll check it out on Drupal.org and then with PingV.  We are working on some iPhone apps for Weavo users, however.

Stay tuned,

Claudia

yep, it's Safari

yep, that is why I decided to bring it up, I have the 3g phone with the latest software update....just to be clear, I can post text.  I can see and enter into the Subject and Comment box.  I do NOT have the icons that are up above that signify bold, hyperlink and photo, none, they just don't appear.   Whether I use enable or disable rich text.....I'm not sure what version Safari the iphone uses.  Not critical but as folks migrate to smartphones as their source of communicating on the internet we might care sooner or later.

Just thought I'd bring this

Just thought I'd bring this question back up. Have migrated to the Verizon flavor of iPhone 4 and still no photo icon for me. I can read & post text but cannot upload photos.

More detail about the problem.

Okay, I have the Verizon DroidX. Google.

I can see all the icons when I click on the screen to post a new comment. Once I click on the green photo icon to add a photo, the usual dialog box "insert/edit image" appears.

As I am not pulling an image from a URL, but rather my phone's "photo gallery", when I click on the small red & blue icon to the right in this box, I get an error message: "Pop up already open. Could not open window because only one window can be open at any time."

So that means I cannot upload from my phone unless I have already placed my images online, like at Flickr, etc. Correct?

I can get a few steps farther than Deb, but not much. It would be great to be able to upload from the phone's gallery. (I too, am considering future travel without dragging the laptop.)

You'll laugh, but when I was shopping for a smart phone, the first thing I tested on all the models was the abilty to access and view projects in Weavolution!

The weird thing from the

The weird thing from the iphone point of view was that in the first version of Weavo (whatever system that was) I could upload photos but could not post comments or text.  That actually worked better for me because I could at least get photos in and update the text at a later date....I think the smartphone generation will get into this more and more...hopefully Sally and I aren't the only ones facing the laptop transit issue.  Interesting problem but probably not at the top of the list but I'll float it about every 6 months to see if a solution comes up.

Deb and Sally,

You raise a good point.  As more of us try to lighten the load and carry just our smartphone when we travel, it would be very nice to have all the features available.  I will post a note to the techno team and perhaps someone will be able to help out on this thread.  Thanks for your patience.  All efforts are focused on new hosting for the moment.

Work around?

Would a work around be to upload to a site like Flickr from your smart phone, then go into Weavo and "collect" the image to post? Haven't tried it myself (yet) but hopefully someone will let us know. (—Inky will be hitting the road soon! ;-)

I can send photos to MobileMe

I can send photos to MobileMe from my phone, all others involve downloading to computer & then to flicker & then to weavo. The first original version of weavo allowed me to upload directly.

Really, I can just stick to my routine of keeping photos on my phone until I download to my computer. I just bring it up because we used to have the direct functionality & lost it. One of those techno priorities that just have to go on a list.

This is now on our technical issues list.

As a workaround for the time being, I understand you might be able to use Dropbox.  With Dropbox, you can duplicate your image from your phone into a Dropbox public folder, thereby creating a URL that you can use to import the image into Weavolution.

If anyone would like to give this a try, please update with your experience here!

Since I don't get a photo icon on my iPhone this is the best I can figure out how to use dropbox, just copy link, this is what you get.

Also tried to upload to project page. Area where one would paste the link is ghosted and one cannot select the field to paste.

update, that photo has since been deleted hence you get an error message but the point is that I could only post a link to dropbox, not insert a photo

Alright, this is good

Alright, this is good information to have.  Thanks!

Maybe we need to get an iPhone into the hands of our site devs. ;)

It's always the things you've never tried before that turn out to be broken.  There should at least be some way for this to work, so this problem is added to our issues list as a defect... i.e., not working as intended.  (We have many ideas for improving the site... but it's nice that our defect list is actually rather small.)

JJ, I have found that

JJ, I have found that quickpic created by cliqcliq.com as an iPhone app works very well for uploading photos direct from my iPhone to Ravelry. It appears they can custom link it. They also make an Android version. Perhaps after the next system warp jump the QuickPic phone app might be worth considering. Regards Deb Mc

Hi JJ, just thought I'd ask this question again after the transition...any chance we can use quickpic as a way to upload photos from our smart phones?  The data is above in #12 above!

Quickpic

Hi Deb,

I couldn't find the Android version of QuickPic that you mentioned... I found two different applications named "QuickPic" on the Android market, but neither are by CliqCliq... and I don't have an iPhone.  So, I haven't been able to look into this.

If QuickPic requires customizations to Weavolution.com to support it, then I don't believe we'll support it, at least not soon.

Here's the link for the iphone version, it works great with Ravelry, a direct load from the iphone to the ravelry project page, painless...

Since I don't have an android I can't find that app, I found it once, I'll check again.

Mobile Investigation

I've done some investigation into the problems we're facing with various mobile devices.  I would like to encourage people to add more comments about their experiences.  The model of your mobile device appears to matter - at least for Android devices, where Sally and I have different problems with the Droid X and HTC Incredible phones - so please include this information if you can.

As I mentioned elsewhere:  Any workarounds that I or others recommend are intended to be
temporary.  We recognize that workarounds are not a solution, and we aim to take ownership of each problem, and not push it back onto our community members.

   - On an iOS device (iPad, iPhone, iPod touch), the Browse/Choose File button is greyed out on the Add Project, Draft, Yarn, and Loom pages (reported by Deb).  This prevents all uploading of images to these types of content from these devices.  Note: I'm not aware of a perfect solution to this problem.  I understand that iOS does not provide a way to transfer images off of the device without using a 3rd party application such as Quickpic, Dropbox, or Flickr's app.  We do need to add a way to type or paste in a URL here (you can't even do that on a PC - clicking the text field pops open the File Browse dialog).  After we do that, unless I've been horribly misinformed, iOS device users will need a 3rd party app solution - but for now there is no workaround at all.

  - On an iOS device, the toolbar will not appear when posting messages in groups and forums (reported by Deb). This prevents all uploading of images to groups and forums from these devices.  Note: Even if we can get the toolbar to appear and the pop-up box to work, you will need to use a 3rd party application; the Browse button will not work for these devices for the aforementioned reason.  For now - there is no workaround at all.

  - On some Android devices (HTC Incredible, reported by John), in groups and forums, clicking the picture icon does not open the upload pop-up window.  This prevents all uploading of images to groups and forums from these devices.  No workaround at all.

- On other Android devices (Droid X, reported by Sally), in groups and forums, clicking the picture icon then clicking the Browse button causes an error message.  This prevents direct uploading of images to groups and forums from these devices.  Workaround: It should still be possible to transfer photos to a 3rd party (like Flickr or Dropbox) and paste a URL into the URL box.

   - One piece of good news - selecting a file to upload from an Android device (HTC Incredible) to the project page, and then uploading that image, appears to work.

Yes, Deb, my parents bought

Yes, Deb, my parents bought me an iPad as an early birthday gift (I will be 49 again in August).  My mom cannot keep a secret so they gave it to me 2 weeks ago.  I have downloaded and am learning how to use Dropbox and could use some help.

How do I move photos from my Camera Roll on the iPad to Dropbox so I can use them in Weavo?  I would greatly appreciate any suggestions but I cannot figure out how to get the photos into Dropbox.  It's easy on the computer and there they are on my iPad but I cannot get them from Dropbox to Weavo or FB or any other online network.

Thanks in advance for suggestions,

Claudia

I am able to upload from Dropbox on my computer.  Here is an example of a scarf I wove.

can't help you on dropbox, it

can't help you on dropbox, it only creates a link to the public dropbox picture, you cannot upload the image to weavo, I don't know about your ipad BUT on my iphone I don't get any of the boxes at all for uploading a photo....  please see our discussion and an example up above in #9 & #10. Here is the link: #10

See #15 for the very easy link that Ravelry has created with quickpic.  It works beautifully with the iphone ON Ravlelry and I suspect with a little focus that that function would work well here for ipad and iphone

I use an app called MediaMailer to send pics to Flickr. I searched the apps store for it but it is apparently is no longer for sale. There are other photo mailers available but I have no experience with them.

Okay, here's what I see on a Droid. (I tried to add a photo to this forum today.)

I touch icon of "tree" to add photo, making sure the cursor is in the text box before doing so. Text box assumes orange outline and briefly turns a % of orange before proceeding to next window.

On the computer, when this next window pops up, I select the "red, white, & blue" box to the right, as I want to select an image to be uploaded from my phone. (You can see in the image of the box is greyed out, meaning it is selected.)

Argghhh! I have a third photo to load to this post from my computer, but I am now running into the same intermittent photo-loading problem I have been having for months now. No go.

There are 27 weavers online as I try and complete this post. Can only so many people load photos at the same time? (The photo load progress circle spins around and around, but there is no photo load.)

Will try again. And again.

Droid, Final image

Okay, starting a new post was successful for the final photo upload after a few more attempts above. Here's the final screen shot, with the error message I get. (Apparently I get a little farther here then Deb on her iphone. She doesn't even get the icons.)

So, any ideas? Is there any way to make the photo insert window a single window with drop-downs, not two separate pop-ups to complete the process? That might actually be more user-friendly in general (less click-throughs for everyone.)

I would like to be able to upload from the phone as I do not store my photos online and I travel to places where I can access Weavolution with my phone, but not my computer. With the capabilities of the phone, I am considering traveling less and less with the laptop, so making the site smart-phone friendly would be an immense asset.

Many thanks for continuing to chew on this challenge!

I apologize for sounding like

I apologize for sounding like a broken record. I, too, am tiring of the slowness of progress in this area and for the photo issue.

Honestly, here is my dilemma. I need to meet with our developers and am working on a time that is compatible for Kay, PingV and me. Kay has excellent technical skills and works full time on the West coast so coordinating schedules is tricky. In addition, I must invoice all our advertisers in the next 3 days. This is a task only I can do and our 12 support volunteers are working on several other things. All that aside, I will do my best to give you a better response in the next week.
This is a priority for me since it is a problem for our users and I would like to see it resolved ASAP and will do my best to keep you informed. We have the same goal.

Thought I would bump this

Thought I would bump this issue up to see if any progress was every made on being able to upload photos from the iPhone. Ravelry appears to have identified a solution and it works very well. I just don't post ad much anymore due to this missing option to upload from a smartphone within weavo.

To review the basics, as I type this I only have the "subject" and "comment" box. Absolutely no icons for anything else. Doesn't matter if I disable rich text or not. No icon for photo upload. Regards Deb Mc

Hi Deb,

We do not have a solution available yet. The problems that you and Sally have generously detailed here are of definite concern to us.  With Erica & Oliver having recently taken over stewardship of Weavolution, while our attention to specific issues like the mobile experience may have slipped a bit, I can assure you that it is most definitely on our radar.
