So how do you measure a reed to figure out what size to order in another dent?
So you mearure the width of the reed? or do you mearsuer from end to end (wood plus reed)
Thanks

With the reed...

out of the beater bar, first measure the height....they are going to want that.  Most looms will handle a variation in height, but why not get what works best for your loom.  Then, they want to know the measurement, I think, from the inside of the left-most metal end to the inside of the right-most metal end.  Finally, to determine the dpi or dents per inch, place a ruler on the reed from side to side and count how many dents are in an inch. I hope this makes sense!  One last note...if there is only one dent size that I would be able to get, I'd have a 12 dent reed....so versatile!

and/or measure the beater! If

and/or measure the beater! If the beater has closed ends, that measure is the critical one - with open-ended beaters the reed can be longer... Also, measure the height of the beater. Some looms (my AVL, for instance) need a minimum height reed, which I came to notice the hard way. (See the tale here)

Weaving width

I get my reeds from Gowdey (http://www.gowdeyreed.com) and he usually only needs to know the weaving width, height, and desired dents per inch.  To get weaving width, measure the inside width of a frame where the heddles attach.  No sense getting a reed wider than your frames.
