My Corner Of The World - Sept 2010

Because of the popularity of this thread, we'll start a new thread each month!

The idea is to tell us what is going on in your corner of the world.

It does not have to be weaving related, but it could be.

Please include a picture when you add your post. Weavers arevery visual people. Please remember to downsize your photobefore uploading.

Be sure to tell us where you are (city, state/province, country?)

This forum has members internationally.

Have a good day!

time differences

I think I am between 15 and 20 hours in front of the rest of you in the States, and about 9 in front of Europe. Next month we go over to day-light saving, so it will all change again. It gets hard trying to keep up with the time differences sometimes.

cheers, Caroline in Adelaide, South Australia.

busy month

I'll be heading to the Oregon Flock and Fiber Festival in Canby, and the California Wool Festival in Boonville this month,  I've been working on my inventory for both shows, and another one, The Natural Fiber Fair in Redway, CA which is the first weekend of Oct.  Well, actually I won't have a booth at Boonville, but I will enter the spinning competitions, and donate prizes for competitions.

I'm making felt pieces for the fairs.  Keeping my big felting machine rolling.

So, Busy Busy Busy.

This is Laverne's basket

This is Laverne's basket which she shared last month in My Corner of the World. She made it 7 years ago using rolled up newspaper for reed to weave it.

And now, because I am not afraid to try something new, here is my first attempt at basket weaving!

As you can see, it's very rough. The good news is that I'll get better.

My lovely wife Tracy saw this and said she did baskets like this in Campfire Girls. She hasn't thought about it in years.

Laverne said to get a full sheet of newspaper (2 pages) and tear it down into thirds. Then take a knitting needle and starting at the bottom left corner at about 30 degree angle and start rolling sideways to make a long tube. Keep the first few rolls very tight. You'll get a tapered tube that is smaller at one end and flares at the other. Use a bit of white glue to attach the last end. You can push small end into large end to as you go to add more tube.

So I made some tubes at work and made the above basket just to start getting the feel of it. I did not have a knitting needle so I used a big nail I found on the work bench. No white glue so I used cellophane tape. What can I say? It's got to get better.

I have to go surf the web for basketweaving.

Have a good day!

Those rolls look pretty close

Those rolls look pretty close to what you are hoping to achieve, Franco. Good job! The basket...well, not so much :-) but the fun is that we will get to see your improvements. And the pdf is coming...it may even go on my blog so I can add video.  I will include the basic basket making process too. Getting it started right is the trick. I have found all my notes and diagrams but not the knitting needles!

Me and the inkle are back in Arizona this weekend. BTW, I finally posted the draft for this pattern last week. I know Laverne would never let a pick-up pattern languish this long on one of her looms!

Weavo-meeting in Denmark

I am back from our very rainy holiday in Denmark. Hvide Sande is a beautiful part of Denmark and it is where Ellen has her summerhouse.the first photo is like her backyard.

dunes at Hvide Sande denmark

We met at three o'clock in the afternoon. First she served us coffee with homemade bread ,strawberry jam, honey and danish cheese. The  bread was delicious. then she took me to her weavingroom and show me all her beautiful weavings. We sure are different kind of weavers. I could see and touch the shawls she made .she likes working with fine, luxurious yarns and she must be a very patient women to weave items with such fine yarns and beautiful patterns. I was so excited that I forgot to take pictures. But you can see them on her projectpage.Photo below:me and Ellen .I showed her some of my tiny projects and my tapestryloom i made for this trip. I hope Ellen will share some pictures as soon as she's back in Copenhagen and has acces to the internet again. The bag is mine ,Ellen made the cushions on the couch and the curtains.

In the evening she served us fresh salmon with homegrown potatoes and green peas. We enjoyed talking together and as both Ellen and Jan speak a little german even my husband could take part in the conversation.

thank you so much Ellen .This meeting enlightened our rainy holiday!

last photo: it was fun working in the open air and enjoying the little time of sunshine we had.

We've had some rain here also, fortunately almost all is flowing to the rivers....I can see white water from my studio!  Not a normal view!  Our cistern is overflowing so I am trying to scour wool while the water refills!

Weavolution brought us

Weavolution brought us together. When i talked about our next trip to Denmark Ellen invited me for a visit .So we arranged to camp near to her summerhouse in Hvide Sande. though we have a different weaving style we could understand each other and talk about weaving very well. Ellen has a more traditional approach (10shafts countermarchloom).I am the  more playful type who weaves small items(on 4shaftloom) and is trying all kinds of small looms .

Love that photo!

Your dog and budgie are simply joyful.  As we lose over 5 minutes of daylight each 24 hours, seeing the strong springtime sunlight cheers my heart!  In my corner of the world (Anchorage Alaska) it is beautiful fall weather, the mountain colors are changing, the weather is cool, and the bears are foraging for winter...as a matter of fact, while he was hiking, my dad was charged this week by a female grizzly bear and she was about 5 feet away when he managed to spray her with pepper spray.  Thank GOODNESS she turned and ran away after that!

Winter is just around the bend...

Welcome to Weavolution!

It will be officially spring here in Santa Cruz, Bolivia on September 21st. I suppose we have to have a date to mark it as otherwise we would never know. We don't really feel the seasons here. Flowers bloom all year round and it is hot and humid 90% of the time. The ceibo is in bloom now.

So where is your corner of the world? Australia? New Zealand?

Just u stay away from those mumma bears!

Hello Bolivian Warmi, thankyou for your welcome.

I live in Tasmania, an island under Australia, very distinct seasons. Which we tend to revel in. Tho a recent trip to the tropics gave us a good understanding of high humidity and bright beautiful plants. Its all very exotic where you live.

And its not anything remotely resembling spring here at the moment, I'm still in winter clothes!

Farmers Market

Farmers Market

My corner of the world: Sacramento Farmers Market at Sunrise Blvd and Highway 50

Every
Saturday the light rail station parking lot is converted to a farmers
market where farmers bring their products to sell direct to the public.
Vendors are certified as actual farmers who work in the surrounding
area. As you can see there is a lot of produce for sale.

These are herbs for sale.

These
are buckets of flowers for sale. There is a black bumblebee browsing
the flower in the center under the little white arrow. These flowers are
fresh.

Often there is live music for enjoyment. Today is a 3 piece band with bass, guitar, and accordion.

Here
is our stuff from the farmers market. Got potatoes, squash, cherry
tomatoes, sourdough baguette of bread, oranges, a plant called hummingbird
sage which I bought because it attracted bumblebees while it was on the
table. We bought white peaches and yellow peaches. We also bought some
organic eggs (not pictured).

It
was a busy day for us. Our chihuahua, Paco, needed to get his vaccination shots.
The mobile vet trailer is where we get shots for our dogs. The two men
on the left are veterinarians. There is a table to the right where
people get their paperwork filled out and pay for the shots. It's
cheaper to go to the mobile vet clinic than a vet's office.

And
there is an airshow going on this weekend. Overhead there was a Stealth
bomber, an F22 Raptor, a squad of L39 jet trainers, a couple of acrobat
flyers, but none of those pictures came out. I did manage to get a
couple of pics of these P38 Lightnings.

It was a good day!

Here in France, we're

Here in France, we're enjoying the last day of summer.  The weather is absolutely beautiful, and although the sun is lower in the sky than it was a few weeks ago, it still gives warm and beautiful light!

On my balcony at the equinox

The flowers on my balcony are happy for all the sunshine they can get.

And just to prove it's almost autumn -- I have an achey, drippy cold!  I am wrapped in a shawl, sipping tea and planning future weavings....

It's wonderful to see what's happening all over the Weavolution world!  This is really a nice community.

Thrum Peace Flags

Last Tuesday, Sept. 21, was Peace Day.  I celebrated by making these thrum strips from the leftovers of my throws, and putting them up along the fence as peace flags.

They don't show up very well here but once the ground is white with snow they'll stand out better -- if they last that long.  I used duct tape to hold the trimmings together, then I stapled them to the posts.

This is also in celebration of my upcoming trip to Assam, a state in India, and Bhutan, a neighboring country.  Both regions are known for their progressive environmental policies, and Bhutan has the GNH Index -- Gross National Happiness -- upon which decisions are based.  Both have a HUGE weaving tradition, which will be the focus of my visit.  Assam is also famous for unique naturally-colored golden silks (muga) from silkworms that eat wild forest plants (not mulberry).

I'll be on-line from time-to-time so I hope to post as I go.  Only 4 more sleeps!!

Bonnie.

Don't forget to check out the new thread for October. (He's one busy loom when it comes to traveling, but sadly, not a lot of weaving gets accomplished at this time of the year.)

Okay. I have to admit, I am having a lot of fun with this. But I can't wait to finally post the finished band from this warp, and weave something else!

This is a great...

way for us to keep in touch! I really enjoy reading about everyone in their part of the world--it does make it seem much smaller, doesn't it? And, to actually meet another weaver from our weaving community is a real treasure!

Here in Jordan, we are at a crossroad weather wise. It had cooled off, and we even had rain one day ( after a 5 month break, but this week is very summer like again with very cool nights. Of course most people are ill.

I'm finally winding a warp for a baby blanket in wool. It will be a cream warp and pink weft done using an Atwater pattern from her book of "recipes." I have spun a bit of Boarder Leiceter I found in my stash I brought from the US.

Also, squares woven for a coverlet have finally been crocheted together by a friend of mine. I hope to post a picture soon.

Cheers!
